I've just got in a 2002 MV6, and it's got the CCR 2006. However, the battery had been disconnected and I don't have the car pass. The headunit is in 'SAFE' mode, can it be decoded, or is there anything else I can do?

Can`t be decoded online i.e. not using serial numbers. Needs to be decoded physically.

Is it a particularly difficult job to do? I'm getting much better at jobs now, but would have no idea where to start with this.

Should be able to get it done for about £25. Need proof of ownership whether you`re gonna remove it or get someone to come to you.

Pay for a car pass?

really need to buy the car pass, you will pay the same to have it decoded,so you might as well get the Carpass which has the key codes too, so another key can be programmed if needed

I think I'm being rather dim, but I assume I go to my local VX garage and give the registration or vin of the vehicle and they can then give me a car pass with the correct code?

Yup, registration is enough. Will take a day or two to actually get the details, its totally random if you actually get the propper card or not.

If the radio isn`t the one fitted at the factory the code on the pass is useless

Worth shopping round different dealers - iirc, Kidlington is Evans Halshaw, and they want stupid money for the carpass. I find Bridge and Banbury a better dealer. Mention Omegaowners as well

Yup, registration is enough. Will take a day or two to actually get the details, its totally random if you actually get the propper card or not.

VX dealers require not only the V5, but some other form of identification as well, ie: driving licence or passport, as proof of ownership.
You also have to fill in and sign a form stating you are the registered owner, and they photocopy all the documents before they aquire the pass for you, to cover themselves against fraudulent theft.
I know, as I had a similar problem. Tried two different VX dealers, both demanded the same paperwork before they could get the pass.
Only difference was the price, 1 wanted £45 + VAT... the other £25 + VAT. First one said it would take a week !!  2nd one 48 hrs. (they had a paperwork code sheet 24hrs later, and got a proper plastic pass 2 weeks later.)

I actually needed the key code rather than the radio code (which was incorrect, as I swapped the crappy car400 for a CCR600/CDC2 with the codes)

Hope this clarifies the situation. 
(didn't want you to turn up with just the car reg/vin and be dissapointed)

Thanks Dodger, mmm that may prove problematic then. I'm a motor trader, so the V5C isn't in my name as it's a vehicle I'm selling. I'll just have to talk to them and see what's what. They know me well at the garage and know I'm a trader, so they may be able to help. But thanks for the detail, always good to go in prepared
