Rear Fogs Help needed - Ex Plod
« on: 24 March 2010, 18:34:46 »

Took the ex plod project for MOT today, Failed on rear Fog Lamps not working, must admit the one thing I didnt check (2000 FL MV6 Saloon).

No volts at the bulbs, reversing lights are ok, so assume the return earth bit from the boot is fine, fuses seem ok, I assume the switch operates a relay somewhere which I can hear but not find, sounds like behind drivers side air vent somewhere?.

Being explod, rekon the wiring has been butchered!, Cars not been out of service that long as last MOT was done by the Police.

Any pointers please, wiring details / route, or anything else I should be checking.

Cheers Chris.  :y

The relay you can hear is within the main light switch - prevents you driving around for 3 weeks after the last little bit of ground mist without you realising you've not switched your rear fogs off  :y
Where the wiring goes up the boot hinges is a likely spot. What about the trailer socket behind the boot trim - right at the rear of the boot - there should be a blue/black loop.

Right need more info on this please, checked the rear boot wiring and the Tow Hitch area, all seems fine, buzz's through to the Bulb holders. Now got the fuse box out and half the wiring hanging down under the Dash. complete and utter mess behind the fuse panel, wires jointed, lots of bullet joints, thin cables going thick, with no colour coordination.

Thinking the Police would have wired up the rear fogs as a wig wam config being switched on from their own blues and twos panel (now missing of course).

Thinking it might be easier to start a fresh and if ness just install new wiring from the fuse panel or back off the relay.

Can anyone confirm fuse number(s) for me, as I seem to have more fuses than normal plus some missing (been cut), also any help on rear Fog wire colours from the  panel would help.

Cheers Chris  :y

edit: nearly forgot, I seem to have the Drivers Side Bulb wired separately but cant trace that back to the Fuse Panel, is this normal? are the rear Fogs each wired / fused separately.

AFAIK the face lift still uses a blue/black for the rear fogs.

Is this the red 3.0 ex dpg by any chance?
I've got a 2001 'Y' 3.2 from DPG, had the same issue with mine, rear fog lights weren't working. The Met along with other forces had alternating flashing fog lights. That's the reason why something's not right. I took mine to my local garage for some other minor work to be done, and mentioned the fog lights, he fixed them within 10 minutes, next time I go there I shall ask him what he did.
However, I do know there is a relay behind the drivers air vent area, when mine was out it said 'boot mod' on it, to enable the boot to be opened with the key in the ignition...so I think it's connected.

Yep, its a red DPG / Rapid Arms Response of the Met Police, think they call themselves SO6 Group now. How did you know that?.

Funny you should mention the rear boot release relay because that was throwing me today?, it seems to latch on when the rear fog light switch is pressed?. Small black relay behind the light swicth, labeled rear boot mod. Allows the boot to open whist your driving, no idea why it clicks on when the red rear fog symble is on on the dash???

Any more info would be cool.

Cheers Chris. :y

I tend to remember far too many pointless things  ;D I remember you posting some time ago you'd bought a 2000 3.0 with 80k miles or so in red, so I knew it must've been DPG.
The DPG cars do give a fair bit of trouble actually, I'm having trouble with mine...trying to work out why the rear electric windows won't work.
As soon as I've got any good info, I'll let you know.
I've thought about removing the boot mod thing, and seeing if that helps.

This is starting to do my head in now, Engine running push the rear fog lamps switch, light flashes once on the dash and it  latches a relay behind drivers air vent, you can now open the boot with the engine running, this condition seems to stay like this untill you switch the lights on and off or remove the key. Same deal with Headlights on the only difference is the Rear Fog Dash blub stays on, again boot  switch now works with the engine running.

Still no joy with volts getting to the rear Fogs though, trying to work out why the Police would wire up a system like this?, I know there was a Gun Cabinet in the boot behind the rear seats, because of the holes left, pressed marks on the carpet and a load of left over shells.

The Drivers rear fog lamp is wired separately which seems to disappear towards the dash area. Theres no fuse 28 its been disconnected (fog tail lamp), fuse 2 is in place and working and I seem to have fuse 8 in place (daytime running lights) with some additional wiring attached which dissapeers behind the dash?

not talking about wires, didnt even mention wires, talking about the spring pins in the plug, the plug is black/purple.

...and yes the wires are black blue for fog lights on the face lift as well.

But looks like this is"slightly" more involved than any of that....   :o
