Very poor cold starting - fuse + relay info please
« on: 11 August 2011, 08:43:56 »

HI
My 2.5td 1997 omega diesel has suddenly, ie no build up, starting really struggling to start when cold. Takes about 3 to 4 mins of turning the starter almost continuously to get her going. Hot starts fine.
I suspect fuel supply and/or the glow plugs. WDYT?
So can anyone tell me which fuses and relays control the fuel pump and glow plugs?
I will check the fuel pump this evening to see if it primes but would great to check the electrics first.
thank you all

Inlet manifold off (may need to replace paper gaskets Vx part no 90509135 x 6) probably cheaper from Land Rover dealer.
8mm spanner to undo the nuts holding wiring, 12mm deep socket to do plugs,

Don't use cheapo plugs whatever you do. >:(

I've used NGK on several and had no problems.

Before you start changing glow plugs, check the GP relay as the 2 contacts can start to arc and be intermittent.

On top of the relay theres a multi pin plug, with six black wires going to each plug, should be 12 v on each while the GP dash lamp is on and 12v stays there for about 5 secs after the light goes out.

Theres also a heavy fuse that's screwed down with two screws in there as well.

Pull the multi conecter off and measure each plug to earth each plug should read 1 to 2 ohms.

Chris.

hi zirk
i did consider the relay. Is it serviceable?
Any ideas on cost for it?
I have replaced the plugs. Looks like only 2 were working anyway so needed doing.
thanks

Sort off, as a temp fix, if its arced across you can carefully file it back again.

Its a BMW part, so could be sourced from BM, Freelanders as well as Vauxhall breakers or second hand suppliers.

Some pics and Part number here, the post doesn't relate to your problem, but gives an idea to the relay etc.

Nice one Zirk
Just out of interest, as i am awaiting for the corporate snail that is Vauxhal to deliver some parts to finish the repair off, I am currently driving around in my Omega with NO inlet manifold. Its very smooth if a little slow (due to no turbo boost). Amazing what a diesel engine doesn't need to to work!.
Pics later.

Must admit Ive driven cars with some bits missing, or even missing Tax or Mot in the past, but never without an Inlet Manifold, lol. :D

Wouldn't advise you do it for too long with the amount of crap that gets thrown about on the roads, the last thing you need is your Head and Valves trying to chew bits of grit or stones while its sucking air in.
