£299 seems a bit excessive just for a chip unless its a custom job done on a rolling road.

I was thinking of trying one from german ebay in my mv6 for about £40.

Might work, it might not but he doas seem to have some good feedback from english customers.

Don't do it!!!! You will get good power gains but at a huge cost to the mpg, I looked into this for my audi and spoke to a few guys who had them, they ended up getting around 17mpg out of their 1.8T's!!!
17mpg doesn't really worry me too much, my other toy goes down to 3.5mpg

I wouldn't mind getting a bit more low down grunt out of my mv6 though.

every mod that will bring more power, will consume more fuel..

law of thermodynamics ;D

doesnt that assume the engine is running at optimum in both parameters before adjustmens are made ? :-/

Exactly - my tractor is about 18% more power (alledgedly) and 10% better mpg on average since chipped.

Chip changes don't work that well on non Turbo engines, they just iron out any little flat spots, but on Turbo petrol engines you get more power and torque and Diesel Turbo's you see more power/Torque and better MPG.

your engine is already de-tuned by the factory..not counted ;D

mostly..but nowadays factories tend to choose economy..

That may be true, but put a better G/box (BMW man or auto) on and retune to BMW spec then add chip, much better fun to be had, along with better economy.  ;) :)

Good point.
Even on the diesel it still depends on how hard you push the peddle.
The extra economy is easier to see on the deisel because it is all low down torque so you don't have to nail the throttle as much to get what you wan't from the engine.
We have a tuning box in my wifes diesel merc which I thrash and don't get better economy but it is definately quicker however she drives it all the time and it seems to be about 5% better on fuel than it was without the box fitted.

mostly..but nowadays factories tend to choose economy..

They are factory tuned to be cleaner burning rather than any other reason to keep the green party happy which is good for econemy but bad for power.

In some cases with diesels they will not pass the emissions test in the mot with a tuning box plugged in.

although optimum air fuel ratio is fix,

for a given volume if you want to boost the power over its capacity ,

consumption increase is not proportional because of energy losses..

Ok so why are alot of "Tuning box and Chip" companies in Germany where the emissions test are harder that ours. I know of three VW Golfs (2xMk 4, 1xMk 5 TDi's) that AMD have done Chip's on, that pass MOT's with flying colours

I have a chip in my MV6 it seems a bit more responsive and mpg hasn't really suffered at all :)
