MV6 POOR ECONOMY
« on: 25 September 2011, 08:32:38 »

My 1998 3.0 MV6 is still suffering with poor economy although getting better with each change thats been recommended by people on the forum. Both ICV and MAF and been swapped to see if that helped and it has a bit but i'm sure its not the cure. Ive now done the paperclip test and i'm getting 2 codes although I cant be sure if they are old codes as for some reason disconnecting the battery for 10 mins didnt clear them? (code reader tool on its way so ill sort that soon). Anyway the codes im getting are 73 & 57  - both voltage low idications, does this help point where my issues lie?

what mpg are you getting & what kind of driving do you do? Auto or manual? A 3.0 V6 & economy aren't usually usedin the same sentence.  ::) ::)

Cam belt timing out.
Blocked exhaust.
Multiple rams inoperative.

What figures are you getting?

Ok its a 3.0 manual. As for type of driving, well around town alot of the time but also a fair bit of dual carriageway. It had a good 30 mile blast yesterday and seems to be giving a consistent 26mpg so very little improvement on a run which isnt what it used to do - I was getting around 40mpg when I got it 3 months back. Would the multirams generate low voltage codes on the MAf & ICV? How can I test they are working?

I have a 98 MV6 auto, my trip to work is 9 miles total, not getting much more than 19.8 - 20 mpg average with mine, but thats not getting above 50 mph where I know the box stops slipping, once I get over 50 mph instant consumption goes up to 37 - 38 mpg, obviously then average goes up.  On a constant run at 80 mph on motorway which isn't often I average around 37 mpg.

Pretty poor I know, but have refreshed most sensors on car (except cam and both knock sensors), and had cambelt done recently, so I know cam timing is correct.

What do people think to that then?

Not bad, mutirams give a step in power at around 4k if not working.

Multirams checked and all working ok. Exhaust definately not blocked and timing seems spot on.
Any more ideas?

Well my manual MV6 3.0 never did anymore than 21mpg and my 3.2 is doing 23mpg thats about spot on theres no point driving a 3.0/3.2 v6 sensibly youll only save 2-5 mpg so may awell drive it properly!

by the way NO 3.0 V6 will ever do 40mpg! are you working it out correctly by doing the maths vs fuel used vs mileage done or trusting the inaccurate trip computer?

No i'm going on the trip computer readings which may well be inaccurate but surely it shouldnt change just like that - proportionately 26-38mpg originally displayed should turn to 25-27mpg for no reason even if its wildly out should it?
Equally the low voltage fault codes are being caused by something its just a case of what? Ive now cleaned all connectors including the large pair by the battery, checked battery connections too. Only thing not checked electrically is the alternator

The thing that people dont seem to be picking up on is the fact all the comments about 2.5 V6s getting x & y mpg is that they are getting different readings around town compared to on a run -  mine is roughly the same!
Ive just done a vacuum test and im getting readings of approx 20 at idle which I believe is about right going on other posts.
What I am noticing now is slow pick up til about 30mph then its fine.
Any more suggestions?
