2.5 td turbo types
« on: 25 September 2011, 20:58:35 »

hi

i have been having my diesel injector pump fitted :) and the mechanic has informed me that the turbo is hanging on for "dear life", :( or did he say daffy duck?

anyway, what i am trying to find out is, are they the same or different across the build years. mine is for a 2000 w reg.

is there a part number or identification plate to look for.

thanks if you can help :)

As far as I know, all the turbos fitted to UK spec 2.5 TD's are the same...

thanks for the information.

there is not much power from it and oil is passing into the ducting (i am told) egr valve is oiling up and on start up, there is large amounts black smoke out the exhaust.

Not convinced with the diagnostics to be honest, lack of power is likely to lay elsewhere, and would explain smoke..

Like the EGR being stuck open, or the MAP/MAF* sensors being FUBAR..

(*Depending on year, I cannae remember when it changed from MAP only to both)

i was advised it was the diesel injector pump at fault. codes and noise, but upon fitting a replacement it still has the ticking noise. i have obtained a turbo so am waiting for that to arrive and be fitted. i now have a diesel injector pump going spare so hopefully i can get some costs back from selling the one taken off the car in the first place!!

egr valve will be last straw!

i am starting to loose faith in a good car. all this money into a big pit. i thought buying a car with service history and old mot's gave a good indication of a car mechanical condition, so is seems i am wrong. privious owner must not have given a dam about his vehicle, one more thing to go wrong and it will be a can of petrol and a box of swan vestas!

This might be the wrong thing but are you sure the ticking noise is not comeing from the timeing chain I've owend a few deisles over the years and most smoked a bit at start up and under sudden hard accelerateing lack of power if on pull off seems norm mine pulls well put seems to lack power but as the car nearly weighs 2ton I put down to that on motorway it accelerates well just a couple of thoughts  :y

Oiling-up of the charge-air pipe (the manifold that's embossed 'Turbo Diesel') is very common with this engine.

On all the TDs that I look after, both the charge-air pipe and EGR are thoroughly cleaned at each engine oil/filter-change. It takes but a few minutes plus a rag and some degreasant - simples!

I'll add that these cars are so treated every 2500 miles - and it's really paying dividends. Trust me!

Agreed ..........

Black smoke is simply unburnt fuel - end of!

Has the obvious been eliminated - such as air filter/ducting condition?
I'm often amazed how many so-called 'fuel-injection specialists' fail to check these first! :-[

black smoke at start up normal for a diesel,

egr sticking? again common cleaning or blanking is the answer to eliminate it,
ticking? could well be a bad exhaust manifold gasket, I had just one go the ticking noise drove me nuts, the car smoked a lot!!!if you have this the turbo will not produce full power as its losing exhaust pressure which is how the turbo runs,
also a cam follower needing regapping, also as said timing chain sometimes ticks, a bad injector will also cause a ticking,
on balance i think i would ask if someione here who knows the diesel lump could have a quick look, far to many "mechanics" take the easy way out(and the most profitable) and change bit willy nilly, ie injection pump/turbo, etc etc

hoofing it

Have you checked the stainless steel pipe from the egr to exhaust manifold they tend to split at the maniold where it clamps on :y

thanks for all the help. my car is still awaiting the turbo arriving, but when i am told it is all back together i will let you all know how it has gone. i did have a look at the egr valve / pipe. should there be a gasket between the egr valve and the locking cover (thing bolts go through)?

i have to accept i bought a lemon. by the looks of the car when i saw it stripped down, there was lost of straw and grime on the under tray. i think the prevoius owner knew there was something big wrong with the car. i have a replacement diesel pump fitted and now the turbo. i what i paid for the car and all the work i have done myself + garage, is over what i could ever dream of getting back if i were to sell it :(

when i saw the car my heart bought it not my head. we are expecting child number three in december and it is perfect for us. big boot (pram) 3x proper seat belts in back and for me its the manual + diesel set up.

any way thanks for all the help and will post with the out come.

When you get it back from the garage, if its still not right, then feel free to nip over to York... I can have a nosiy for you and see if I can find any problems.

Failing that, where abouts in leeds are you?
