all, ok times have changed for me so looking for a  3 or 3.2  estate,  I see a lot come as autos etc, how releiable are the auto boxes compared to the manual boxes I kind of got used to driving the vectra 2.6 estate  that my ex  had and it was a good work horse so time to hang up my shoes and part with my old girl and buy an omega estate.


Whats the fuel economy like??? anything bar leaking gaskets that I assume   are common on the v6 etc etc

I would like the omega elite  with all the toys but still shopping around atm

Like all things mechanical, they can last a life time or give up after a short time depending how they're looked after. The auto g/boxes are good strong boxes generally. I've had 4 auto omega's now, 3 elites and an mv6 and never had an issue with the boxes!

The usual weak link in the engine bay is the cam cover gaskets. They usually give due to blocked breather pipes which happens due to lack of servicing (oil changes) and regular cleaning (every 12 months) or every oil change if keen, lol.

Overall, the omega is a good, strong and reliable car. If you need help with maintenance, problems etc, this is the place to be to point you in the right direction and save you a fortune!!

If your going to get an Omega, see if one of the senior/more knowledgable guys are local to you and ask if they'll go with you to look over one.....you can only ask

Might be an idea if you can add in your name title, your location. People will know where you are and if they're close by or not

In addition to the above, the normal maintenance items like Cambelt & Tensioners (every 40k/4years) and suspension items should be checked and an allowance for changing them made if no evidence of them being done recently.

Bodywork wise, look carefully around the rear wiper spindle for signs of rust, in addition to the normal weak points of arches and door tops.

sorry, I am down in eastleigh hampshire.  The ex's motor was a 2.6 veccy  so i did all the work to that , rocker covers, sump, all th eleakks etc  etc etc and I did the timing belt as I have the necesaary tools at home thankfully. I did see that the omega tailgate does suffer with rust on the spindle but well will have to wait and see if I can find one in good condition , been looking round fleabay and the traders so  keep look  out , whats the average price I should be looking at for a top spec model like a omega elite  or cdx etc ?

That depends what you're willing to pay and how fussy you are

I was looking for 2¹/₂ years for the right one (although my requirements were very specific) and paid a little over £3k for it 6 months ago Top money (or more than top money) in some people's opinion but worth every penny as far as I was concerned as it was the only one in that time I had seen that ticked all of the boxes for me I've since spent about £1800 putting it right (because it had full Vx History ) and fitting LPG. Not much left for me to do now but probably another £1.5-2k if I do all I want, which includes Irmscher stuff

But... It's an extreme example I have very specific requirements/wants and specification that I was always willing to pay top money for If you're not so fussy then they can be picked up for much less money and still be good cars

Good luck with the search and feel free to ask for opinions on here if you want... Be warned though, that if it's priced highly (like mine was) there's bound to be a few people who will tell you it's too expensive Just remember... It's worth what you are willing to pay for it

I have had three  2.0/2.2 omegas and they have all been automatic.  Like anything else, if you service it reguarly it will last.  My last omega did 380k miles on the same gear box, my current one is coming upto 240k miles.
The auto is not as good as the manual gearbox simply by virtue of the fact that the auto is 4 speed and the manual is 5 so the mpg is not as good, however if you are on lpg like me this compensates.
The one thing that has gone on all three is the gear selection switch. I cant remember how much it was but it was bearable!
Overall, 3 omegas 2.2 CD or CDX, very relable auto gear boxes!
