Major coolant leak
« on: 12 November 2011, 19:40:30 »

Hi
I have eventually found the coolant leak i have had for a while, the trouble is it was the cover for the oil cooler it had a hole that someone had bodged in the past with some metal filler.
The cover is beyond repair see photos also i'm not sure if the oil cooler is okay as there is a bit if corrosion on it, see photos.
My Question is where do i get a new cover and is the oil cooler okay.

Also should i change the thermostat whilst i am able to get to it?

I would be inclined to replace the oil cooler complete and all associated seals . :y

If you have had issues with the thermostat for the sake of a few more £,s it is almost begging to be changed ,but all depends on issues you have had in the past and how much you are willing,or able,to invest on your car. :)

It is much cheaper to buy just the thermostat and easy to change, rather than the whole pipe assembly. I used fleebay and got a branded QH part.  :y

The Car has been running okay, apart from once when it overheated due to water leak.
So should i change thermostat and housing or just thermostat?

seeing as you are there now take thermostat housing off and have a look at it, it will probally be ok  :y but seems silly not to change the thermostat, you dont really want to get everything together to find thermostat goes a hundred miles down the road, as i said whip off the housing and check it over , but do replace thermostat  :y

Contact a few of the breakers here, many V6's being broken. Sure someone will have a cover plate as they are not often needed, send a PM to RobG/Elite Pete/Albs sure one of them will have one  :y

I'd change the oil cooler too, if the cover has failed like that its suggests poor coolant maintenance. Good chance to change the stat too while your there, although no critical  :y

Sorry, just seen this. The cooler plate is available as a seperate part.

Tips:
DO NOT BEND the oil cooler pipes, undo them by oil filter!!!
Renew all the copper washers, and also the dowty washers on the coolant bridge
Replace the stat with a genuine GM one, as its stripped down.
Use grey sealant, and let it go off for (ideally) 24hrs before putting coolant in.

Good luck!
