You dont need freedom of choice Bob, you need protecting from yourself. ::) ;D ;D....in which case all motor vehicles should have restrictors fitted which only allows them to reach the speed limit on the road the vehicle is on - watch this space. ;) ::)

Personally I don't think people should smoke in a car, but seriously I also don't think the government can tell you what to do in your own property. I think people should be able to do what they like with something they pay for, then pay for every year so it can be used, and then get taxed on top of that.

... ban production of cigarettes, job done!

I've been in your car Bob, as you may remember :) and being an ex smoker that can smell ash tray and smoke stench from 50yards, there was no smell at all iirc...? So guessing it's no biggy for you...?

I agree with a ban totally. However there are far more serious things to worry about IMO. Even though I can smell a smoker in the car in front when sat in my own car with windows shut.  >:(

If smoking in a car, the smoker should be forced to drive with thier own window shut, not just for benefit of others, but to bang home how really unpleasant it is, even for the smoker. I mean why else do they drive with the window open? Because it's a bloody awful habit is why.

Also shows the strength of the "drug" that people are prepared to endure it.

Obviously a ban is in force for company vehicles, and others in the car should be protected from the filth also. Now it's to protect the smoker from themselves. Although in the last instance, a ban there implies authorities believe all else is right with the world, which is a little disturbing IMO!

If I didn't know you better I'd think that you were joking ................ but you're not are you!!!!!!!! ??? ??? ??? ???

I smoked for over 25 yrs but haven't done now for nearly 10 (although I think I might have had one of Carol's at Newent ??? ???) People smoking near/next to me doesn't bother me at all.  :y :y

The technology is available and New Labour did say that they would consider introducing it in the longer term.It may well be here in the future. :y

i think that if theyre going to ban smoking in cars (presumably cos of the two hands on the wheel thing) then surely car stereoes should be banned? and manual gearboxes? or anything that takes one hand off the wheel. its ludicrous.

im an ex smoker (although i love a social smoke when i'm pished) and have become addicted to nicotine patches instead: no tar, just calming nicotine all day long baby  :y

Can't be arsed to read the thread, but I agree with such a ban.

Nothing against smokers (I believe I have several times said on here that banning smoking in pubs is wrong).

But if its illegal to eat/drink/phone/read/crossword which driving, smoking should also be included.

Listened to this today on the Jeremy Drone show & it seems all arguments have been covered here. I accept for years non smokers have had to put up with smoke in public bars/eateries etc & it's most unpleasant so fair go, it's your turn now but this has shut many such establishments & put alot of folk on the dole...which costs the taxpayer, i no longer go to pubs/restaurants as a rule.  Since the work/pub ban many folk have given up, that's no bad thing but again loses the government revenue which again costs the taxpayer. Many of my friends don't smoke & i respect thier house/car rules when in thier company without question & never smoke around children anywhere. As for the safety behind the wheel as we can't use hand held mobiles (i agree with that one) or eat a sarnie then let's ban passengers, CD players & listening to the radio all of which can be distracting so let's ban car stereos if safety is a big worry.

Non smokers have got thier own way at last & i don't begrudge them the freedom to eat/drink without being subjected to what even i accept is a filthy habit so maybe a little perspective is due. My car is'nt a public place & i'll do what i bloody well like in it...within reason of cousre. I valet my cars that often & thoroughly that it probablty smells better than some non smokers cars.

Just because a law is passed does'nt mean it makes sense or will be enforced.... i still smoke in my truck & how long ago was that outlawed? The Police & VOSA have better things to do. This won't happen & if it does i'll ignore it.

Lastly i admit i wish i was a non smoker. It's a stupid unhealthy, expensive pastime but i like it. Guy.

Whats interesting is the response you see when you sit down with someone who has smoked for years in your clinic and tell them that they/their loved ones have cancer. All this bravado and manliness is replaced with an emotion that is difficult to describe on a forum.

Its impossible to ban the sale of tobacco because of various reasons financial and political.

I am therefore for anything that reduces the easy path to smoking, be it an increase in tax or a ban in as many places as possible. Anything that will discourage the younger generation to not take up smoking is welcome in my book. It has to be cultural for it to be effective in discouraging the young ones from smoking.
