Power sounder and startup
« on: 23 December 2011, 20:41:10 »

Hi fellas, :y
Can you tell me if the power sounder can affect starting in any way. Couple of times now, I have had the power sounder kick off after shutting down the engine at night.
Next morning the car turns over but no sign of firing. The power sounder then beeps three times after turning off the ignition. Leave to stand for thirty seconds and it starts as normal. I wondered if it was connected to the immobiliser in any way, or some circuit that it (the power sounder) is not allowing to become live.
Knowing my luck, probably a coincidence :(

It`s a coincidence, but, the three beeps are indicative of failing internal batteries in sounder, remove & bin before it decides to self-combust

Its a well documented thing on here when you decide to ditch the powersounder.

I know the risks in keeping the unit as part of the system and I am also aware of the shortcomings if/when an insco assessor sees that it is missing/root cause of the fire but, my personal choice...

Replace a failing unit with a new one rather than run the car without.   :)

Thanks for the replies ;)
I shall remove the power sounder after Christmas.
The reason I thought it might be something to do with imobiliser/power sounder is that when this happens, the engine sounds 'empty' for the want of a description. Exactly the same as my Laguna does when the imobiloser is active. No suggestion of firing.....but after the short 'rest' starts as normal.....very baffling.
On the times it does not fire, would that store a code showing this happening, that the kind Mr TB could pull up at a later date :) with his little machine ;)

Hmm. I wonder if the power sounder is trying to tell you that the main battery voltage is falling a bit low during cranking? Not sure why it's not starting but that might be related to a low voltage too.

I'd be running through this just as a precaution, I think. http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90619.0

Could just be a dead power sounder. Catch it early before the batteries leak and you can open it up, change the batteries and re-use. :y

Thanks for the link, Kevin.
I'll meter it and see what results I get. I would say that I have never had a battery problem, it still starts on about the second or third turnover of the engine.
Runs a dream.....gets loads of charging with my weekly run to Brackley and back, then every month or so, gets the run to Dorset and back. no dash lights on.

+1 vote for main battery on its last legs.

When I first got my car it was cranking slowly and would sometimes trigger the power sounder when starting. When I checked the battery it was reading around 10 volts fully charged indicating one very dead cell.

Or the failing PS could be dragging down the battery, charging the short previously known as batteries?

Followed the link from Kevin....12volts reading after being left fo r20 hours. Key in, turn engine, started perfectly on second revolution, no sign of beeps.
My meter only goes to 13.5, but the reading after starting was against the end of the scale. ;)
I think this is a case now of leave until it plays up again, then take a new reading. However, the power sounder is down for extraction after Christmas :y

Merry Christmas to you all :y :y :y I'm now off to spend my Christmas round the corner from TB ;)

I would expect 12.5 or more from a fully charged battery. It could be that the battery is getting a bit weak, IMHO.
