Help...work in progress, cut pipe.
« on: 28 December 2011, 11:21:18 »

Hi, im in the process of replacing the HBV and got the wiper motor mech out . Now i have found a pipe thats been sliced in half , one end connects to the power steering pipes and the other end leads to the back of the pollen filter into a little black box...the pipe looks like an air pipe , very thin connected via black rubber push on . Whats this for ?? I can re connect easy enough but was wondering what effects this has been having to the car . ???

Sounds like a vacuum pipe ............... but it doesn't/shouldn't connect anywhere near power steering  ??? Vacuum controls the heater flaps etc and the HBV

It does look like a vacuum pipe and there is only this one that has been sheared through leaving the 2 ends...one to the black box and the other end to the pipework leading to the brake servo  ???

Im just asuming these two ends do join together as the ends both look chewed up and know where else for them to go , or would they just be loose floating air vacuum pipes ?

Ok for now i will leave this , i have to crack on with the HBV replacement before it gets dark ......any advice greatly received .

Thank all  ;)

I think the only pipe that doesn't connect to anything, is a gearbox breather. Have you tried joining the pipes together?

Connect the ends back together.

You threw us by saying one part came from power steering pipes, when you meant brake servo pipe.  The two are quite separate systems, one hydraulic, one pneumatic.

Yes sorry about that  :-X for now i have pushed the pipe back into the servo ...its a bit short but ill get another pipe . The HBV has been fitted , quite easy job once the wiper motor ass is out the way ....lucky i was doing this job or i would not have see this cut pipe !!
Just the main cooling rad to replace and she should be back on the road .

Oh and the pollen filter was black as soot  ::)

What action does the pneumatic pipe give  ??? Or what wasnt it giving while it was cut ??

Check the maintenance guides, there is info there on the vac pipe routing and operation.

Checked the guide but thats got me thinking now because i dont recall seeing any vac pipe coming through the bulkhead , after i re connected the split pipe the car seemed to idle much better that it was doing and throttle response was much better ? Ill double check tomorrow though just in case .... ;D
