BMW 530 eating rear tyres???
« on: 29 December 2011, 18:22:22 »

A friend of mine has a BMW 530d, its got just over 100k on the clock and over the last 8 months he's had to replace the rear tyres twice?!?!? Now its nearly time again for a new set & he's tearing his hair out as its costing a fortune. He doesn't do mega mileage & he's no boy racer, neither does he use cheap & nasty tyres. Upon looking at them the wear seems to be right across the tread, wearing evenly, its not confined to just either inner or outer shoulders. Anyone have any thoughts on what could cause this??? I was thinking along the lines of worn suspension???? but i'd thought it would have worn more oddly ie. shoulder chewed off??? Any help appreciated.

I find that happens on RWD cares ;D

If he really is Miss Daisy, I'd get the geometry of the rear checked, but if rear toe was drastically out, there would be evidence of feathering...

My 530d would eat the rear tyres every 8000 miles. It was driven briskly, however. ;)
Remember the tyres are having to cope with a lot of power and especially high levels of torque.
How many miles is your friend getting from the rear tyres??

I'm not entirely sure how many miles he does, but 3 sets of tyres in 1 yr seems a bit excessive, I know he doesn't do the miles to warrant so 3 sets. I've advised him to get a full geometry check done before shelling out again, at least it may rule a few things out.

From memory, the run flat tyres for my car were £200 each :'( :'(
I can understand your friends concern.

I still wouldn't hesitate to have another one, they are superb cars :y :y

even with a geometry problem 3 set in a year seems impossible unless he drives it 7/24 :o or  drifts in the sleep ;D

I've done a set of rear Avons in 4k in an Omega (with a BMW diesel engine), so 3 sets seems more than possible with enthusiastic driving.

thats it.. I used the tires in miggy for 4 years and probably maximum 2 mms of thread used.. but when I decide to get rid of them started really enthusiastic driving and the same depth used in 3 months ;D

With even wear I'd be surprised if it's anything other than the tyres dealing with the large amount of torque being put through them ;)

My lighter 335i used to eat through a set of PS3 or SC3 in about 8-12k depending on how I drove. The 5 is heavier and the diesel has much more torque. I would say its impossible to drive sedately in a 530d. They are too much fun to be driven sedately!

Whats the history of the rear dampers? Any lost damping or banging from the rear? Any cuts along the tread in the direction of rotation. Any oil around the dampers shaft?

Multi link rear suspension bushes are due to fail on miles if not on age already. Of which there are many. Allgermanparts might help there.

If the above show nothing failed consider set up at wheels in motion, or ask on thier web site forum for advice. Suspect toe issue but see what they say.

do the wear evenly? or does one side go?

My record is 48k from a set of tyres  :P  ;D
