My Car has started beeping!
« on: 12 January 2012, 20:41:36 »

This is a really weird one!  :-\

My 2.2DTi Est (02 plate) has started to emit 3 beeps from the off side of the engine bay when the ignition is turned off. I have had the car for 18mths and it has never happened until 2 weeks ago. It doesn't happen every time, only about 50% of the time.

Has anyone got the faintest idea what it is? ???

Powersounder batteries failing. Beeps are a warning of possible self-combustion. Remove & bin. Replace with new to keep the factory specced alarm

Does the Power Sounder have batteries in it that can be replaced or does the whole unit need changing? ???

Sorry for being a bit of a dunce - have never liked the electrical stuff!  :(

Thats a bit grim.

As others suggest, remove powersounder, let Norfolk County Council bury it in landfill.  Up to you if you replace it. Most don't ;)

If it's only bleeping then the chances are the batteries haven't leaked yet.

They can be replaced but from your humble confession ;) you may not want to take that on.  They are not designed to be replaced.  Also, the fire hazard may well be due to inadequate protection in the form of a fuse.  I would be inclined to add an in-line fuse if I were replacing the batteries.  It would be internal to the unit and somewhere around the 1amp rating at a guess.

Land-fill isn't the best place for the old unit as it contains cadmium amongst other nasties, but the alternatives are not necessarily simple.
