Purchasing a broken Mig discussion...
« on: 22 January 2012, 17:12:31 »

Hi folks, hope you're all well.

I am going to be purchasing a broken Mig for me to ''practise'' on. I've spoken to my folks and they're happy to have it on their drive for when I want to work on it so it will be on a SORN.

I've spoke to a couple of guys on here about possible contenders (thanks for advice). I'm thinking one that needs as much doing as possible e.g. head gasket gone, so that I get to throw myself in at the deep end and try and fix it!

What are people's thoughts? Is it just a case of buying the cheapest one (looking to spend max £200 for a ''spares or repairs'' jobbie)?

*** Am I correct in that you don't need to insure or tax a SORN? If so at what point do I ''apply'' for the SORN.

**** And if there's anyone on here who would care to quote me on a towing service to get it to my folks that would be great!

Cheers.

1) No ins. needed. If no tax, should already be SORN`d. If not on SORN, apply as soon as.
2) Depends from where to where

A very good idea and will be great for you to both learn on and get your confidence up. I'd suggest trying to get a V6 so it's the same as yours plus you'd have some spares if you needed them :y

That's a great idea actually Webby, but why not get a facelift so that you'll at least have a source of spare parts for the inevitable times that yours will f*** up go wrong?

EDIT: Great minds eh?

Although thats a lot of car for the money,I would agree with LD. Get a V6,you wont learn much about working on your own car if you buy a 4 pot.If you learn your way around a V6 a 4 pot will seem very simple afterwards. :y

Thanks for all the replies  :y

That estate is a lot of car for the dosh!!! I've also PM'd Bigyin following his For Sale post.

Very true about working on the V6!

So in short, I find a car, agree to purchase, register a SORN, pay the seller, have it towed to my folks' house then Bingo... I can set about fkcuing it up fixing it.  ;D

Just one point to note Steve...

Even if the car is registered as SORN when you buy it, you will still need to register it as SORN yourself when you register it in your name, as the SORN declaration is not transferable from one owner to another.  Also, the SORN only lasts a year, so if you keep it longer than that, you'll need to complete another SORN declaration.  :y

Thanks Twig.  :y

So if I go to pick up a car, should I be insuring and taxing it up until I get the ownership paperwork from the DVLA and then register as SORN and then cancel the insurance?

 :) :) :) :)
