I SORNed my Astra last October & took it off the road. Today I wanted to organise road tax for Wed so it could go back on the road. Looked on the Direct.Gov/DVLA web site to see it if I could do it on line and surprise surprise it seems I can only tax from the beginning of January!!! It'll take till Wed for the disc to arrive by Snail Mail ................. Looks like I'll be in a Post Office queue on Wed

The car I'm picking up from Ralf tomorrow will be on a SORN once it gets here but depending on how the repairs go I aim to get it up 'n' running and probavly run it myself for a bit so would be interested to nkow how come you can't simply tax from the date you require.

Because RFL is sold in complete months and it's not the end of January, so it needs taxing for the whole month

You can ........... as long as you're prepared to lose weeks of a month. You can't do part months.

DVLA stand to gain £millions due to the similar situation of not being able to tax a car that doesn't have insurance on it. If you wanted to keep a car on your drive when the insurance ran out but didn't think that the hassle of SORNing it was worth while - you'd be a criminal & be worthy of fining!!!

if it on own drive it dont need insuring if sorn, it in places like public car parks where problem is

Unless the vehicle has current RFL, the only people who can buy it in advance are dealers Who actually have to mark it as 6/12 months + 1 Week

So keep it on a SORN.... and taxing and insuring from the 1st of the month is the way forward if you want to run the aforementioned previously SORN'd car?

I know the reason .......... but I thought the system might have catered for the honest amongst us.

but it's the other way round I was talking about. Last year, my bike was sat in MY garage with road tax but no insurance, that's now against the rules! Why? I was losing out by 'wasting' the road tax on a boke I couldn't use because it wasn't insured.

I think as long as the cars not going to be used till the start of the month you can apply for it early,even on-line I'm sure?  if your sending it to DVLA, they will issue it when its due,saving the month, Im in the same boat with mine, it was registered disabled so all has to go to DVLA, lucky for me mines in my garage and I dont need to use it untill its taxed anyway 

 I dont think the old bill recognise " my M8 on the forum told me its ok" 
 
Ring them they will soon tell you.

I think as long as the cars not going to be used till the start of the month you can apply for it early,even on-line I'm sure?   .............

SWMBO used to work in the LVLO in Pompy many many moons ago, and even then, you couldonly get next months disc if you went in the day before. But ISTR that they would post it to you if you went in before hand.

I've been on the website & I could've taxed it from 1/1/2012 but as we're now on the 29th and it'll take till Feb for the disc to arrive I'd have thought I'd have been able to use the web to tax it from 1/2/2012 ........... but there isn't that option

I think as long as the tax runs concurrently you  may tax up to 2 weeks before its due, however as its sorn there lies the problem, you can apply to buy early from dvla they just wing issue it till its due, but it will be in their computer so you may not get trouble from our boys in blue as it will show as taxed, they may decide to tie tow it and crush it because its not displayed but thats another issue lol

It's now bought and sat on the side board waiting to go in the car. Directgov. doesn't give the option to be able to buy it early when it's SORNed ie you'd have to buy it starting from 1/1/2012 and lose 4 weeks of January, why don't they have the option of what the bloke in the local Post Office had this morning?
I taxed the Omega online last Fri but that's already taxed and the new disc will run on from the old one - I'll have the Astra legally roadworthy if the Omega's disc doesn't arrive by Wed.
