Anyone have any genius tips for screw/bolt removal
« on: 29 January 2012, 21:54:32 »

As above but I'll explain what I mean  ::)

Just been watching Cambelt DVD (again). Looks very straightforward (thanks to the excellent guide) however due to the amount of screws, bolts and components that have been removed has anyone got any good tips for keeping bits in order and not losing them?

I've seen some people (on here too I think) use a piece of cardboard and screws peirced the cardboard ''in order'' so reassembly is easier.

Obviously people who do this often will know what they're looking for automatically but for most of us who are either just starting out or do the big jobs seldomnly is this the best way?

Not really looking for advice.... just a generic discussion about what people do. My company would call it ''sharing best practices''  ::)

Personally, just chuck them all together in one pot ::) Even when doing major work (HG replacement upwards) :-X :D

The pierced card is a good idea, or separate pots with a label for what they are :-\ Even (where possible) put them back into the hole once the item is removed ;)

 ;D I'd definitely get confused!

I also thought about labelling HT leads bearing in mind at the dis-pak I'll need to know which lead I'm working with without having to recheck everyh 2 mins.

Bits arriving in the next few days that my momma is kindly supplying... surgical gloves, cable ties, labels and blue roll  :y :y :y (p.s. she's not a dominatrix  ;D..... or at least I don't think she is  :( :( :( :( where's that puking smiley....

I've been doing it a long time though, and once you get used to it you know/remember what goes where ;) ;)

HT leads, I must admit to labelling if they aren't obvious for ease, as it can be a PITA having to trace them ::)

If you're doing a job for the first time, remove bolts/etc & lay them out as they came off (sometimes bolts are a different length) & then when you've removed it thread the bolts where they came from in a couple of turns.  :y  :y

Digi cameras are great for this kind of thing, especially if you won't be putting it back together for a little while.  ;)

I have several magnetic trays which helps prevent losing bits. ;)

To: Andy & Adey...

I like to think I don't have a bad memory. But maybe due to a bit of over-anxiety of not ballsing the car up I'll concentrate on 99% of areas and miss one fundamental element. So I think I'll do the cardboard trick  ;D

Was thinking that mate. And it's all stored in chronological order too!  :y
