My auto gearbox doesn't seem to change gear
« on: 20 February 2012, 07:42:12 »

Started out for work this morning and found my 2.2 CD Auto was a little 'sluggish'. Noticed that the gearbox doesn't change gear and it's really slow to move off once stopped.

Any other signs, doesn't always start first time?

Any warning lights?

First thing would be to check the autobox fluid level and if mieage is getting up a bit and you have no history of gearbox oil might also be worth thinking about getting it replaced along with the filter screen.

Tired oil will make a box quite sluggish with a tendancy to hang onto gears then bag as it chages up or down.Clean fresh oil makes a VERY big difference to its performance and not an expensive job to do.Excellent write up in maintenance section aswell.

As it's a 2.2 I'd check for fault codes. Although it does sound like it's in snow mode.

Thanks for advice gents, will check oil - have been getting orange spanner light coming on intermittently, but clears as soon as I stop and restart. Have also been having snags when starting after short journeys.

Yup, i'd be looking at cam sensor. Crank sensor on the 2.2's is bullet proof.

Sounds to me like your car is setting f in 3rd gear ie in limp mode. Use 1 2 & 3 to prove  ;)

Defo cam sensor, it needs replacing with a genuine one from a Vauxhall dealer, do not get one from anywhere else.

Fix the engine issue (soon) and you'll likely find gearbox cures itself.

Get a local member to read the codes, then take appropriate action as recommended here. Don't bother with garages, they universally do not understand cars.

Certainly possible, even likely, but we teach better diagnosis than that here, don't we ;)

Totaly agree, but cam sensor doesn't always bring up the correct codes.
