Decatting by gutting the innards of the Cat then welding the lid back on gets around that....  :-X

Would there be any gain to de-catting the BMW lump, in the same way?, when it's chipped?

about 4bhp...  Easiest performance boosts on the TD are the chipping and blanking the egr...  I looked into de-catting the cat, but, found that the performance increase was minimal... 

When I had the whoosing sound that you describe, it was the pipe had blown off the hard plastic turbo diesel piping at the front, but sounded like there was a blow in the exhaust too (when the bonnet was down)...  Broken EGR pipe is very noticible with the engine running and the bonnet open, also a huge loss of power and not a whoosing noise (just alot of noise), a cracked egr gave a hiss...
