Just wondering what strategies people use for selling cars on ebay.

ie Classified ad, Buy it Now or Auction?
Duration of auction? 3, 5, 7 or 10 days?
Do you have a low starting price and a reserve, or No reserve and start the auction at the lowest price you'd accept?
Best time and day to start and finish auctions?
and any other tricks of the trade!!

I think if you want to sell for the best money then Autotrader is a better bet.

Yeah, not sure I'd list a car on egay, unless it was a dog...

eBay is the devils work, so I avoid it. Best strategy for me anyway.



Although it doesn't help with buying eternal mid sections, ESP as they refuse to answer the bloody phone.

Egay have ramped up the fees so much for selling vehicles I think Autotrader is a better route, plus you don't get messed about as much

if i sell anything on there i always try to make sure it finishes on a weekend, got a right bargain last weekend, vectra on 02 plate 84k miles, no marks or dents on it, 7 months mot,supposidly engine scrap, got it home and it just flooded, purrs like a kitten now, all for measly sum of 280 quid

Ive sold a few on there in the past and have used the buy now or best offer. Apart from some idiots offering you a third of the price ive generally got what I wanted. Ebay fees are daft though. Especially now.

I put a car in Autotrader recently at what I thought was a reasonable price and didn't get any calls, so might as well have flushed £45 down the loo.  At least with ebay the higher fees only kick in if you sell it...

Didn't bother with ebay when I sold my saloon. In AT for 2 weeks and hadn't heard a thing for 12 days so we decided we were going to keep it as a spare car That afternoon I sold it for full asking price

It depends what car it is and what it's worth... Have a look and see what they have been selling for on ebay before listing it though

I think you can get messed about on AT and Ebay

Sometimes you can not sell a car does not matter where you advertise it at

You can allways buy a car but not sell one.

i would try the free options first eg gumtree and ad mag
sold 2 cars on gumtree in the past couple of months and one went in 10 mins [ i had just had the advert confirmed as going live when the phone rang] and one in two days both cars where just under a 1000 pounds.

sold a few on ebay well 3 normally put it in classified with best offer cheaper and can run for 28 days yes get silly offers but thats ebay normally managed to get close to what i want agree not best place but you can upload some good pics etc and use as many words as you want to describe it etc

Quick Update!! 

I listed the car on 10 day listing with the start price at my break even ( alot less than comparables on ebay), so the absolute minimum I'd accept.  I had about 200 views, 7 watchers and no bids!!!

I relisted it on a 5 day listing, with a 99p start and a reserve price which again was my break even and again alot less than comparables.  Again there were about 200 views, but this time 30 odd bids, 20 watchers and it exceeded the reserve.  I got less than I'd have liked but made a profit.  The buyer turned up, collected and paid cash with no hassle! 

Next time I'll do the 99p start with a reserve but on a 3 day listing, as I noticed that most of the page views, bids and watchers happened in the last 3 days!

result nice one ..one of the reasons you get a lot of hit in the last few days is they send the details out by email or as an attachemnet to similar items that have ended

in any event as long as your  happy with what you got
