Auto garbox service
« on: 24 February 2008, 23:13:46 »

Hi am slowly completing a service on my 95 elite.  Having had great fun with plugs and fuel filter(stubborn bugger) it is now time for the auto box.  I've noticed when cold it can be a bit slow changing up and thought it may be fluids.  How easy are the filters to get too, Having never done this on before thought eto check rather undoing everything i can get my hands on. Any advise would be great thank you

When cold it is supposed to be a bit slow changing up.  Never-the-less it is advisable to change the box oil and filter every 30,000mls or so.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Thought so but it will hold 3000-3500rpm for agood 8-12 seconds brfore changingup.  Never had any warningcome up egards to the auto box but i thought it was worth checking.  Thanks

I did this last weekend  :y

Load of bolts to undo the 2 sumps
Leave a couple in the big sump, so you can swish some of the old atf out (do this opposite side to the drain plug)
Sumps off, clean them out, scrape off the old gaskets
Scrape the gaskets off under the car as well.
3 bolts to remove the filter.

Reattach everything, fill with ATF, either use a big syringe, or get one of those garden sprayer pumps, fill that with ATF, and pump it up, nozzle in the drain plug and fill till it overflows.
Start then engine, and with foot on brake, engage all gears.
Top up again.
lower car with plug still out, raise car, insert plug
Go for a drive,
jack it up again, refill till overflowing, lower car, raise car, refit plug.

Job done!

Has made the box smoother, some say repeat after 500 miles to flush the fluid, but I dont think mine was bad enough to warrant that.

I'm planning on doing this in the next week or two.
Is it worth doing the thrust washer at the same time??

Hey Jimbob,
This is on my to-do list too: can you remember how much Dexron III was needed and roughly how much cost for filter/fluid and gaskets?  ;)

yes, get fuchs titan 4000, I got through about 6-7 litres, cant confirm exactly as tunnie robbed the rest of it  ;D
Get it from opie oils.  I bought 10 litres for about £42
Didnt mind buying more, as I likely have another car to do soon...
The do 1 litre bottles as well.

I paid £35 to the door for 2 new gaskets and filter.
From 'Dave Kember' who advertises at the back of the Autobahnstormers magazine, straight six news.

a wood chisell was the best tool I found for scraping the old gaskets off  :y

Also budget for lots of washing powder to wash your overalls afterwards, and get about a litre of good shampoo, took me 5-6 washes to get all the crap out my hair afterwards, and its grade 2/3!

Brill, thanks Jimbob....I`ll make a shopping list ASAP.

I do have gasket scraper.....the worst part for me will be getting the blinking car up in the air; I do have super 'ramps' but the low bumpers front and rear foul the ramp before the tyres even get to them.  :'(
I have 4 axle stands, thankfully...so I`ll have to jack up a little bit at a time in all four corners to get the car up and level (ish).
Def. a job for a dry and (hopefully) sunny day.  ;)

Thanks again.

The gasket scrapers I have seen are much to big for the gearbox end..

you need something 3/4 to 1 inch to get into the gaps, and avoid sensor wires running right next to the edges.

I did it just on 2 axle stands, if the car is level, it would save some raising and lowering.

'95 car wont change up until you exceed 3000 rpm for the first time or until o2 sensors are hot enough to begin working. Later gearbox software helps but, iirc, '95 is too early to be up-dateable.
Just push the snow button as you set off (puts it in third) then turn it off again after 1/4 mile.

What a good idea!  That 3.5K change up really annoys me.  Wish I had thought of this.

Wonder if long term damage will be caused though?

I doubt that would cause damage, my old 2.5 was still going well at 200,000, a couple of fluid changes along the way.

As stated it is designed to do this in order to heat up the lambda sensors.  Post 98 ecus can handle an ecu upgrade (ask TheBoy) otherwise you are stuck with it.  I would recommend the oil change though it works wonders for the smoothness.

Hang loose,
