Ok, current PC is an HP Touchsmart 540... rebuilt when Windows 8 came out and now with 2TB memory and uprated processor.

Printer is an HP Officejet Pro 8600+

When Mother upgraded to Windows 10, at first offering of it last year, all was well... (I did express my opinion of the stupidity of this at the time but it was already done )

Following several thousand updates, Windows 10 has deleted all the printer drivers. Tried reinstalling the printer, but it suggests that it isn't compatible with Windows 10.

Suggested solution was to replace the computer to which I pointed out that replacing the printer for a Windows 10 compatible one would be cheaper and easier...

Mother has subsequently been looking at printers, and concluded that something from the HP Envy range would suffice... I actually quite like the Officejet, as although it's a bit of a sledgehammer for home use, it always works as advertised, and will still function perfectly with my Windows 8.1 laptop.

Thoughts please... and if anyone has a legal link to a driver update for that printer/Windows 10, then that would be appreciated

have you tried the hp website that's where I had to get my updated drivers from for my hp photosmart 5520 and seems to work ok

According to HP OfficeJet 8600+ is Win 10 compat - you want the HP "full feature" driver - http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Officejet-Pro-8600-e-All-in-One-Printer-series---N911/4322914/model/4323658/document/c04658195

Just used this driver to update mate's HP Officejet 7612 after it refused to work with Win 10 update.  Now OK

The full download that dbug posted looks good. You may get away with just installing the driver section, but that may prevent network scanning etc.

I've not been impressed with Envy printers (or Envy laptops for that matter) for reliability.  If you can run to it, a (semi) business class colour laser might be a better option.

I paid less than £250 (before cashback offers) last summer for an AIO HP LaserJet Pro (473dw I think), bloody brilliant machine if not printing 100s of pages a month (and toner tends not to dry out like ink cartirdges). I would highly recommend this for general home use. There are better photo printers about, there are better general printers about, but this is a good all rounder at a good price point.

I texted the link over to Mother and told her to follow the instructions...

Only question so far is whether the printer is connected by USB cable... Could be a long evening lol.

Will pass on observations re Envy printers as that is what she was looking at

If the printer is Windows 10 compatible and the drivers are for Windows 10 the maybe it`s a PC problem.

Are all the chipsets and USB controllers using the latest Windows 10 drivers?

Pass... I did suggest uninstalling Windows 10, but that was met with I can't

Rubbish - the HP site confirms op's printer as Win 10 compat and advises a win 10 driver - look under OfficeJet win 10 compatability 

@OP - you need to totally uninstall any previous printer drivers prior to using new driver.  Unplug printer from usb port, run new driver software, and connect printer (switched on) when prompted.

Should have been clearer... When it was rebuilt, Windows 8 had been out about six months and was installed from scratch...

I honestly don't know... Got rebuilt due to hard drive failure...

 I know  if the printer is compatible with Windows 10 and has drivers for Windows 10 the the problem may lie else where, the PC isn`t compatible with Windows 10 in original format but has been rebuilt but to what extent we don`t know. If it`s still on the original motherboard then it`s highly likley that that is the problem as there might not be Windows 10 drivers for that motherboard if you get my drift.

Although you can install windows 10 on the machine and most of it might work there might be a couple of things that don`t.

My old Toshiba laptop ran Widows 10 but a couple of things never really worked properly and then it just gave up the ghost but I`ll gamble that there weren`t all the drivers for it, the trackpad being one, in Windows 8.1 it was fine and worked flawlessly but was not a happy bunny with Windows 10 and the track pad inherited some strange behavior.

It`s unlikely the motherboard will have been changed for a hard drive failure, CPU-Z could tell us which motherboard is in the machine then a quick look on the website should say if the drivers are available for Windows 10

This does not sound like a PC <> Windows 10 incompatibility, more a printer driver conflict.

Taxi Al - dbug's advice above is a good start. Though I'd look in install software list (Start, type "Add or Remove programs") and select the one with cog next to it), and remove anything related to hp printers first.

That's 10 times now...

It still thinks the printer is plugged in... the cable is unplugged both ends, wireless is off and the printer might as well be in Scotland it's that disconnected...

Printer is now in the device list, but no amount of trying will get it to load the drivers... keeps coming back to that same message

Printer is showing in device liust, but states No driver, requires troubleshooting... Small print on HP site says that product drivers from pre 2013 might not have been developed for Win10 and therefore devices might not work properly and, in some cases, not at all

Plugged printer into my Windows 8.1 laptop, self installed in about 2 minutes, working perfectly, so obviously a Win10 driver issue...

Guess you plugged printer into usb port before dowloading and running latest hp driver pack. 

Correct driver pack to download from hp site is

"HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus/Premium e-All-in-One Printer series - N911a-n Full Feature Software and Driver, Ver28.8, size 118.1 MB, dated   Nov 13, 2015."  Thats contains the Win10 drivers for your printer.  Thats the one (Full Feature) I used for mate and it installed fine.

Nope, USB definitely remained unplugged... drivers download fine, but never gets past the first of six installation...

Purchased an HP laserjet DN252w iirc, wouldn't self install, so tried installing from the supplied disc, but computer still said no...

About ten hours of troubleshooting later, and Windows 10 was restored to a point in mid December. Turns out the old printer had been fine on December 21st, but a subsequent Win10 update had stopped it working... two pieces of information that might have been useful to know when I asked the initial question but net result seems to be that something in the update corrupts the printer drivers

We now have two working printers
