General Car Chat / Re: Tax Disc Question
« on: 20 June 2014, 22:41:01 »
Ah well.
I had it in my mind somewhere that you could tax 5 days before the end of the month without penalty, but that may be for renewals.

Wait a bit longer then

General Car Chat / Tax Disc Question
« on: 20 June 2014, 22:26:07 »
Evening.
Can you buy a tax disc for a car that's currently SORN before the end of the month and not lose a month?

Eg if I buy a new 12 month disc this week, will it expire at the end of  June next year or July ?

Can't find anything on DVLA.

General Discussion Area / Re: Corsa radio enquiry (sorry not Omega)
« on: 12 September 2013, 10:03:07 »
Thanks guys. It's a Corsa C btw 2004.

The colour certainly looks like star silver so I might take it out and try a spray. Even a sligt cour difference will look better than paint peel.

General Discussion Area / Corsa radio enquiry (sorry not Omega)
« on: 10 September 2013, 12:11:42 »
Just got a Corsa SRi for eldest and the radio (cd30) has bubbling on the paint from an air freshner !
Thought about spraying it but probs easier to replace it..

It's a 2004 and I believe you either have to get it programmed using Tech II or buy the display with it. My question is are there many variations of "silver" on these units ? The one fitted is a bright silver.  If poss I'd also like to change it for the cd30 mp3 and fit an aux input for the iPod.

Any thoughts or experience of the colour issue ???

Thanks

I need a key programming and also been advised to get the auto-box updated.

I believe Dr Omega used to be "The Man" but not sure if he is still available. If he is, anyone got contact details ??

Thanks

General Car Chat / Omega Key Programming
« on: 12 June 2013, 19:24:13 »
Got 2 keys with the car but have only ever used 1. The second key is already cut but I found out the other week that it's not programmed.

The first key is wearing away on the buttons.

I read somewhere that the local locksmith will only clone the key and not programme it properly using Tech 2. What is the difference in practical terms ?
Locksmith £45 vs Tech 2 £??. Is there a Tech 2 guy near me (Liverpool)

Also can I buy a replacement key and simply swap the already cut part of my original key and swap the internal gubbins so I then have 2 good keys ?

Thanks

General Car Chat / TerraClean - Any Good ?
« on: 04 June 2013, 15:27:57 »
I was watching an old episode of Wheeler Dealers last week - the one with the Jaguar XK8 and they give it to a viewer.

Ed - me old - China used a system called "TerraClean" to decarbonise the engine - he described it as "colonic irrigation for the engine"

He took some emission readings before and after and things improved drastically and the claim is that everything is hunky dory thereafter including engine response and economy.

I know Sam Burton posted his experiences and was impressed with the results on his DTi, just wondering if anyone had any experience with this on a petrol engine.

Sam mentioned about discounts if we could arrange a meet with interested members, but at 1 hour per car it could be a long meet ! !

General Car Chat / MOT Passed - :)
« on: 20 May 2013, 15:07:18 »
Mig passed the MOT today.
Changed the front wishbones (thanks to a very good maintenance guide on here)
Added a tyre and now legal for another year.

It does need a new set of tyres and rear pads before too long though.

Still - I'm happy again  :)

And tell them not to torque up the bolts until they have got the cars weight loaded back onto the wheels or the back bush will just fail again :y
Top Tip mate.. I've been toying with the idea of doing mine too, and wouldnt have considered that. cheers.

Need to do mine too. Can you advise the correct torque ??

Omega General Help / MOT Failed - Advice ??
« on: 22 April 2013, 16:26:14 »
MOT today - Failed  :'( :'(

On the plus side it was only tyres and suspension

Tyres: 1 worn too far the other wrong profile ??? Put spare on last week and that was a /50 profile the others are /55.
Still easily solved.

Suspension: Quote from certificate - "Nearside front suspension arm bush deteriorated resulting in excessive movement (2.4.G.2). Need to get back on the road, but on a budget so was thinking of just replacing the worn bush with a view to replacing the lot sometime in the future. Question is - I think there are 3 bushes on the arm are they the same? or how do I find the correct bush ?

Cheers
John

General Car Chat / Re: Nice mig in the scrappy
« on: 17 April 2013, 12:31:44 »
Well it's here, top end stripped within half hour along with the obligatory cut's to my hands. Drivers side coil pack bathed in oil and cracked, drivers side dry as a bone but original coil pack a bit manky so will need cheap/used replacements. Gaskets on order!!

2.6 is a much tidier engine bay than a 3.0

Get plenty of "2.6" practice. Put you in good form for mine  :y :y :y

General Car Chat / Pug 107 Clutch
« on: 02 February 2013, 16:27:31 »
Anyone had any experience of the Pug107 and apparently "known" clutch issues ?
Mine's got 35,000 miles and showing signs - stiff changing especially 1st to 2nd.

Read about other owners who've had them go at 6,000 miles !!! Later models fitted with a larger 190mm plate which apparently does the job. Would expect a "city car" to have a clutch that's up to the job and lasts a lot more than 35,000.

Still under a 12 month used car warranty so have to see what they say.

If you can get genuine Bosch for that price get them. Usually they are over £100.
I found these on eBay - search for item listing 290576054834.
I got a 2-4-6 in December 2011 and it's lasted so far.
Make sure you seal the scuttle as described elsewhere on OOF - it really does make a difference in stopping the water dripping on the pack and in the plug wells.

Omega General Help / OIL - Why Am I So Scared ??
« on: 23 January 2013, 11:41:21 »
Hi All.

Just looking for some advice regarding oil.

Back in September 2010 the Darth Lord performed miracles on my (6 months owned by me) Mig and gave it a new lease of life. Some of you may remember the pictures he posted under "Why Oil Changes Are Important".
Since then I have had a morbid fear of such a thing happening again and have taken the advice of 5,000mile oil changes religiously.

Due to high fuel costs and the type of journeys I now do, the Mig usually stays laid up and comes out to play on the occassional weekend. Over the last few weeks I have noticed a distinct top-end rattle when I start the engine which usually settles down after a few minutes.
Being scared stiff I usually let it idle for those few minutes rather than have it rattling while driving. When it's warm it drives and sounds like a dream.

Now my question is, is this normal at this time of year in the colder than usual weather or has the fact that the Mig is little used contributed to this? Does the oil "thicken" with irregular use and would this have a knock on effect (no pun intended) on the rest of the oil circulation path - ie pick up pipes etc.

I've done 4,500 since last oil change but that was in March 2012 so due for a change soon, just wondering if fresh oil would clean the system or if I need to add anything to help at the next change.

Thanks
John
