I've been chosen by the RAC to take part in the pilot of their new telematics system called RAC advance, and will be the having a little black box fitted to the Omega in the next couple of weeks. The system records faults and then sends them to the RAC and my phone via an app. Should be handy to help find that niggling  fault of loss of power I get once in a blue moon when flooring it up hills.

Hummmm  :-\

Only Vauxhall's own Tech2 will fully diag any issues, generic code reads, which can only assume this is based on will do little beyond basic fault codes.

Sure this setup is fine in brand new cars, with fully integrated manufacture setup.  This just sounds like a cheap code reader with a SIM card for sending codes out to RAC.

Maybe that's why I've be chosen as a guinea pig for this trail as a tester on older vehicles. Oh time will tell and it not costing me anything anyway.

I'd have concerns personally, at someone not familiar with these 15 year old barges and doing a butcher on the loom. It could easily cause more problems that it solves.

What happens 24 months on, when their hacks/bodges/soldering has large potential to start failing?

Each to their own, but unless they were giving me some serious wonger, I'd tell them to naff off.

Also add into this that a fault code does not give you the full picture, often other failures/issues cause knock on other codes which have nothing to do with the problem.

Cam sensor for example can cause gearbox codes, no doubt the RAC would love to charge people for a new gearbox when it's not needed.  ::)

You need someone at the other end who knows what they are doing  :y

The RAC Advance early warning system is the size of a matchbox, and plugs into the car's diagnostic port,

Think I would also pass on this trial  "offer" simply on the age & technology of the omega

But only my opinion ;)

The diag port is always live, and I know if you leave a bluetooth reader plugged in, it will flatten your battery.

It plugs into the diagnostic socket no wire hacking involved.

I have a similar device donated by a mate who works for a leader in this field, it does very little diagnostics (battery basic fault codes but nothing overly useful) and provides comprehensive data on how crap your driving is.

well. the little box was fitted today asked about power drain and the fitter (a real nice bloke by the way) said it only pulls 0.5 amps when in engine is running and next to nothing when engine is of as it goes into a sleep mode.

Just wait......do you know who the service provider is?

Accelerate sensibly down a slip road and it docks you marks, go round a roundabout at a sensible speed and not 'Land Rover' driven by a grandma velocity and it docks you marks, go over the speed limit by a few mph when overtaking and it docks you points, brake for a roundabout and it docks you points......you get the idea!

That I know Marks, the only reason I asked was because I thought you had seen me driving somewhere. Haha. Doesn't really bother me as I'm not a mad speedster anyway, most of the time. Can always unplug it from the EOBD port if I'm feeling a bit reckless. ;)

My average score since fitting is 48%............I can easily get 0 and its more challenging to get 100

So this mornings commute, quite leisurely, certainly not hugely spirited driving....




The rev counter symbol is for hard acceleration (in its opinion)
Speed camera symbol is for speeding (those show as circa 72-73 mph)
The cornering symbol is hard cornering

So, to summarise, lateral G > 0.002 = bad!  ::)

Ignore my previous comment. There's clearly going to be no challenge in it whatsoever.

We're going to have a lot of mobile roadblocks on the road if people believe these apps!

hum? how come on your readings Marks can you get 43% for acceleration but 100% for throttle? Surely the two would be linked.
