MPG.... what do YOU get?
« on: 20 May 2011, 13:12:24 »

I'm currently averaging 18.8mpg mostly in stop start driving and idiots hesitating.

What return do you see?

I'm hoping a good service will improve this slightly.

I put mine to the test this week actually.

My usual average pootling about and on 10 mile runs is 28.

I did a 100 mile round trip and by nursing it there got 34, and by driving normally got 31 on the way back. Was pretty pleased with that from a 3.0 Auto  :y

Yep - gospel - honest  :) (climate was off) but that's the trip computer figure so who knows if its accurate.

I've done a lot of work/TLC on mine in the last year so am happy that it's running right. Getting the wheels tracked helped as was getting some scrub before.

Could regularly average mid 30's from my manual 3.0 MV6 when I had it some years back. Problem is in not giving in to the tempatation to welly it.

25 around town, 30+ on a run.  That's usually with 2 people, minimal luggage, and sensible, progressive driving!  :y

Oh, and if it helps.... I'm now getting the equivalent of 200mpg from my diesel Cavalier, running 75% wvo!!  ;D :y

Mine needs a service just waiting for payday. Going to clean the throttle body etc and also get the tracking done as its wayyyyy out. Tbf I find trip computers to be way out. I work it out from how many litres of fuel it takes to fill and how many miles I did before.

19 seems low from a manual car to me, unless you drive it like you stole it permanently ;D how long since the cambelt was done? Might be worth doing it early just so you can eliminate the possibility of it being a tooth out and mullering your economy.

FWIW I get 19mpg around town out of the 3.2 Auto and ~28mpg on a 340 mile run at 80mph the whole way.

Actually thinking about it I get more like 21-22mpg around town usually (calculated on petrol put in vs. distance covered, not with the OBC :)).. so 19 in the manual 3.0 definitely sounds a tad low.

3.2 Auto estate - over last 1500 miles, 21.2 mpg, mainly local, some decent runs.

Fairly typical for me.

Currently averaging 23-25mpg from my 3.2 auto estate based on 50 mile journey each day to and from work which is mixture of urban and a bit of motorway.
It's improved since it was serviced recently and using only Shell fuel saver fuel seems to make a difference. Prior to that I was averaging 21-23. On my fairly regular motorway trips to North Devon, I get around 30mpg at around 80mph.

Should add can get considerably more with more careful / slower driving  :y

Reckon I could get mid - high 20's with some care (providing not too much town driving)

18.8mpg but I only do 3-5 miles a day so it doesn't really get off choke.  On a run I've had 38mpg with careful driving. I should add my car is regularly serviced (every 2k ). So yours isn't that far off to me.

I try not to look at it TBH ::) ::) The trouble with LPG is that you don't really worry about the running costs so much :-X :-X

MID on the 3.0 Auto Saloon shows 26.something over 360 ish miles of mixed motorway and fast roads with a little town driving. This is the petrol consumption (not LPG) and used to be spot on when I checked it on brim to brim fills :y :y

My 3.0l auto estate does about 31mpg on the motorway without any pretence of driving economically. Generally it averages about 26. Which makes it more economical than the 525 manual estate I used to have; that never managed more than 27, and averaged 24 over the four years I owned it.

Incidentally, correcting the cam timing on my car(all 4 were a tooth out) not only made it drive better, but improved the enonomy by 2mpg!

3.0 auto over a tank or an extended (multiple fillups)
Best - 32mpg over 1800 miles
Worse - 16mpg over a tank

3.2 auto
Best - 29.9 mpg over a tank
Worse - 18.5 mpg over a tank

My 3.0 MV6 auto is currently averaging just over 29mpg that's a mix of 75/25 motorway/town.

Pure motorway is 34-35 which i think is very good for a 3.0 auto. My old ex-plod manual MV6 used to return around 19-20mpg, but I did drive it like I stole it! My driving is more leisurely nowadays  8-)

Computer says 19.7mpg average, mostly do a 7 miles each way round town commute.  Starts at 30mph, then 40mph with a smidge of dual carriageway just before the end.

Steady cruising on Inst. Cons. has always been around 23mpg, with 3/4 a tank doing me 200 miles give or take meaning I fill up every other week.

Petrol or diesel?  I know the Superb is more Vectra sized (cabin space), but must be light footed to get 50mpg from a petrol one though :y.  If diesel, thats pretty poor by today's standards, esp as the Audi 2.0TDi is an economical unit.

Its a petrol 2.0, drove it at 50-55mph from here in Nottingham via the motorway and A55 to North Wales, average was 50.1mpg, came back through the mountains but still showed 41.9 by the time we got home....

Cant really compare it to a Vectra spacewise, its much more spacious....

Getting bored of listening to myself going on about how good a car it is (for our needs).......

£40 of gas gets me around 270 miles in the MV6.  Driven like its been stolen, obviously...

Why not fit a button as the throttle? On/Off? Suit your driving style  ;D ;D

According to my trip comp, doing a 40 mile round trip along major roads with a few junctions and roundabouts, sitting at a steady 60-65, I showed an average of 29.2 over about 3/4 tank, pretty rubbish really for a 2.0l  :-[

Up to 50.1 mpg on a recent run from Nottingham to North Wales....

30mpg all day long around town.

For the size of the car I cant moan about that

 :y

 :y :y :y
It is Vectra/Mundano size for cabin space.

Must have a light foot ;D

I think you need to get into the back of one and then say its Vectra/Mondeo size.

Its Passat size plus 4inch extra legroom.....

Did have a light foot, on that journey anyway!! Wanted to see what I could get out of it.....

I am frequently in the back (and front) of one ;)

I'm glad it works for you, but I don't think its anything special.  Its not a bad car, its quite a good car, but not worth creaming your jeans over it at every opportunity ;)

Sounds a bit low but if it is all very short stop start trips then it will be. Try resetting trip and have a day out somewhere!

Wow! Surprised you dont get more that 22MPG towing the caravan, unless its a massive thing?

For me:

To work and back (old job): 14-16mpg
To work and back (new job): 18mpg
General pottering around: 24-25mpg ish
On a good run (with car loaded with people): 32mpg ish
On a good run (car empty): 27-28mpg ish.
Mainly motorways with caravan: 22mpg

All with the 3.0 Auto.

456 miles to the first occurrence of the fuel light very recently.  Not sure how many litres it was to refill from there, but I'm pretty sure it was a best ever.  :y

2.0 manual petrol BTW.

er indoors used to get 24-28 around town and it would do 34-35 at 70 fully loaded on a run.

I have seen 38-41 on a run at about 65, I could never bring myself to drive less than that on a motorway!

I take its steady when I've got passengers!

On my own, well... I need to check that I've got 200+ horses pulling me along every now and then  ;D

All boils down to driving style...
I remember when I had a 1.8 Vectra, I Managed to get from one side of York to the other via town centre (at 11pm ish, so avoiding drunks etc) Hit every traffic light at red, and still got 42mpg.  :) Not easy to achieve though – You basically can’t use the brakes, and use the throttle very lightly. Plan ahead as far as you can see almost, and when slowing down, use engine braking so the fuel injectors turn off, that said don’t start engine braking to early, or you will need to accelerate again, like wise, don’t start engine braking too late because you loose valuable time when the engine could be in over run (injectors turned off)! Also, remember that while engine braking, there’s no brake lights! Always keep the car rolling if possible. :y

I am the master of economy driving when I want to. Thats how I can get 40-50mpg out of a petrol BMW. Its not that fast so I just plod along. progressive driving and planning ahead :)

other idiot drivers ruin it though. when they hesitate or make you slow down for no reason.
