A cracking car, great fun to drive, but £16k ! What price nostalgia I suppose.

Although, if I had a spare 20 grand, my nostalgia fix would be met by this.

I guess the price reflects the work that's gone into it, with the new engine etc.  :-\  I love to take it for a spin though!  :y

First track day I ever attended had a very similar looking Mk1 on it, though that one had a RedTop in it.. cracking car - sounded fantastic, easily kept up with all but the very special metal there and the owner looked like he was having a riot in it.

I'd love one, but not at that price!

Perhaps not, as you can buy a new 2.0 ltr Zetec engine wrapped in new metal, electronics and modern comfort for a similar price.  ::)

It still wouldn't be as fun to drive though!  ;)

Exactly. That's the appeal. The only thing that stopped these cars being a total hoot to drive back in the day is that they didn't have enough power to induce gratuitous oversteer on demand.* Oh, and that often they didn't go at all. Problems that are easily solved today. :y

*- actually, my mate's 1.3 Chevette did. I hate to think how lethal the HS was. :o

Yeah - I think the Mk1 is a beautiful car, too, not to mention iconic. I'm not even a Ford guy and I'd still love to own one.. but I think I missed the price-boat by a few years ;D

But it was very easy and relatively cheap to have a lot of power, well set up suspension and an LSD, which made them seriously quick, with superb, forgiving handling. Steering on the throttle everywhere you went. Much more fun than todays cars which are a lot quicker on paper.
The HS handled superbly on dry roads. Wasnt much that could keep up with it. On damp or wet roads though it was a nightmare. Short wheelbase meant that when you lost the back end, it had rotated a couple of times before you realised what was happening.
I spun it on a slowish S bend one evening, and came to a stop in the middle of the local garage forecourt.
The garage owner - a former F3 driver for Lotus, gave me a sarcastic round of applause. My face was as red as a strawbery.   :-[ ::) ;D

You must have driven some seriously knackered Escorts! Even a basic GT spec 1600 cross flow as used in mk1 Mexicos and mk2 Sports gives a lovely progressive switch from understeer to oversteer with just a flex of the right foot. A stock injected Pinto in one makes for a car that is seriously quick over the ground and easy to drive.

It's the progressive bit that is missing from modern cars, although a lot of that is due to massive tyres that have lots of grip until they suddenly have none.

Yes, that's very true. It's evident with Emma's new MX5. The Mk 2 handled beautifully on its' 185/60/14s but the MK3 has "Drug dealer" wheels and its a complete guessing game. And we wonder why drivers don't have a clue how fast they can take a bend these days. ::)

Floors aren't too bad to fix, what you really need to check are the windscreen corners, door hinge pillars and inner-wing to bulkhead metal work. I have most of that to do this summer. If it has a sunroof the rear roof-skins sweat around the rear rails, and that's a horrible repair. The rear roof pillars rot too.

Front panels are horrifically expensive to buy, and getting wings that fit is a real crapshoot.

The last Capri (either a 2 or 3) I looked inside was fairly recently. It'd been stripped for either a brave man to restore or as a donor car, but where the floor pans should have met the inner sills, there was just fresh air. From a few feet away & with one eye shut, it looked quite reasonable  ;D

Advert states 1700, so it's a V4. And considering that the only things a 2.3 Cologne does better than a 2.0 Pinto is drink fuel and weight the front of the car down, a 2.0l has nothing to recommend it ;D

It's part of its charm. I love the adjustable lumber supports too. I actually quite like it, to be honest. Such a shame the donk belongs in an ice cream van.. or being dragged along the sea bed on a chain. ;D

Did you mean RX-3 or MX-3?

But.. your freudian slip was a work of genius, as it turns out. A Mazda Rotary would be just perfect.  8)

I too rather like the seats, if I'm honest. I'm not a 'wedge' man when it comes to cars but it's definitely not the ugliest thing I've ever seen.

Throw a wankel in it, they're small, light.. and will only need rebuilding about as often as it will need structural work now it's left warm, dry California! ;D

[edit] Great minds?
Title: Re: Project anyone?
Post by: Kevin Wood on 11 May 2017, 11:44:53
Exactly.. It's a "sunny day" car, and Rotary engines are perfect for that. It would still take you a decade to wear it out and in that time you could easily save up for a rebuild. It's just crying out for 200 BHP+ and an engine that revs to <meh - not really that bothered, TBH>*.

That engine bay and O series engine take me back. <shudder>

I thought the engine wasn't that bad, actually, just let down by the car around it. That's if you cold make the oil stay in it.

Mine had an irritating habit of dribbling a little oil down from the back of the head somewhere onto the exhaust just as it was warming up, then it was OK. It meant that I left an impressive smoke screen on the first bit of motorway driving in each journey. 8)

It won't rust as badly or break quite so much. And it's the same engine as in the Zonda 8)

The later twelve is a different engine designed by accountants.

I'll conceed that... designed as a four seat SL Coupe rather than a 2 door S Class 8)

Viewed from the side or rear quarter, windows down and it is clearly a work of art. Personally not a fan of the dash or front end of the C215.

Go for the 600 if you can, much more than the kudos of the engine... leather dash, suede head lining and higher grade leather to name but three thing you are unlikely to find on the 500 ;)

Now that is superb!

I'm not really into the prosthetic limb beige paintwork, or the baby vomit interior. But everything else, fricking excellent! I can imagine its a "challenging" ownership proposition from a reliability perspective!

The SM was seriously ahead of its' time. 0-60 in 8.5 and 140+ MPH. Not far off a 3.2 Omega. Speed sensitive PAS, disk brakes all round, rain sensitive wipers, steering headlamp beams... Getting one repaired in the 1970's when the average mechanic probably struggled with twin carbs must have been a nightmare!

Fancy a twin turbo model that cracked 200 MPH at Bonneville. http://www.lefigaro.fr/automobile/2007/12/28/03001-20071228ARTFIG00408-des-californiens-fanatiques-du-chevron.php (http://www.lefigaro.fr/automobile/2007/12/28/03001-20071228ARTFIG00408-des-californiens-fanatiques-du-chevron.php)

.. and speaking of sub-zero cool French cars, I saw a beautifully restored example of one of these a couple of weeks back:

Owner had spent a decade restoring it, and "went to town" on the V8, now sporting 400 BHP. 8)

My uncle used to run one of only two(apparently) in the country diesel Mercs back in the 60;s It would be a bit older than that one. He was and still is a farm contractor and ran it on farm diesel for years taking the occasional fine as a hit. I remember it as a lovely looking car like the ones in the films but I dare say the paint condition wouldn't have been that good.

I think TVRs rust more .. if that's even possible ;D Still basically a kit car you've paid someone else to assemble. In fact, peel the skin of a Cerb/Griff or a Gardner Douglas (Cobra) and the chassis will look awfully similar..

Trouble is (last time I looked, anyway) the "desirable" Griffs & Cerbs are starting to command strong money now. Cheaper than a Cobra replica, though.

:y On the bright side, it's fairly easy to remove the body from a TVR and after that it's all just tube steel..
Title: Re: Project anyone?
Post by: Kevin Wood on 04 July 2017, 11:44:19
Yep, not sure if you can still get "project" cerbs for sensible money but I know a few guys who did that, mainly to carry on touring with the kit car boys after they'd had kids. The plan worked very well. They can pretty much keep up on the twisty bits, too, and when they fail, boy can the reel you in on the straight bits. ;)

The problem is, put a kit car in the hands of someone who understands them and it'll last forever. In the hands of someone who treats it as a production car, however...

Hence TVRs tend to get issues. ::)

Well, they're a bit quicker than the 1800 but a lot heavier at the front. The Leyland 3.0l six is one of the lumps that makes the Essex V6 seem like a good engine.

It's just like the V6 Capris: more of a relaxed GT.

Whats a twin cam v5?

It's a V5 for an Escort Twin cam: one factory fitted with a Lotus twin cam, and therefore rare and expensive. Which means that an identity for one is also worth serious money.
Not that anyone would buy a V5 to 'upgrade' a lower spec car to make money, as that is illegal ::)

As the ad mentions, Wayne Carini owned one briefly, which had been redone in side as a display vehicle... allegedly imported to the US as a BMC dealer training vehicle... imported there from South Africa judging by the plates on it.

If you haven't heard of the Magnum you must be a young whippersnapper.  :P
It was basically the same car as the Firenza, but VX changed the name for some reason. Not a bad car in its day. Handled quite well, and a decent enough club rally car. But even with a 2.3 engine it was a bit too heavy/ underpowered to be seriously quick.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-240-Estate-car/372040117195?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D45730%26meid%3D2a5427b9b5d24bf4868457e048bbf7c0%26pid%3D100623%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D253101141374&_trksid=p2047675.c100623.m-1

Now that's more like a Battle Tank!  ;D
My Dad had one of those years back, but with the nasty V6 engine. Engine aside, it was totally indestructible. I remember he hit a sign post at about 20 MPH once, having slipped on an icy patch. SIgn post was bent over at 45 degrees. Couldn't find any damage on the Volvo.

Another time, he rear-ended a Mk. 3 Escrot. Said vehicle ended up somewhat "compact" from the back seat rearwards. Again, no damage found on the Volvo.

The front bumper contained what appeared to be a length of railway track supported by a shock absorber at each end.  ;D

It's telling, though, that every one of these that you see still running these days has the 4 pot engine.

That brings back some unpleasant memories! The mk3 Cavalier is the worst car that my mother has owned since I started driving.

I would like a Facelift Omega Elite, with LC running gear as my project. A sort of update on Omegatoys original concept.
Omega V8 projects are so last year.  :D
Finding the running gear would probably be the hard part, apart from the fact I don't have the space for any kind of project bigger than a Fiat 500.  ::)

c) SWMBO objected to sharing the passenger footwell with half of the Demon Tweeks catalogue

The original Getrag box was over £600 in the late 70,s.Probably NLA now I would imagine, and like expensive rocking horse dung if you can find a used one with the correct bellhousing. It was a really strong box, but the gearchange was possibly the worst I have ever experienced. Similar with the original engine, he almost makes it seem like they are available in your local branch of ECP, but I would imagine it would be pretty difficult to source one. A replacement cylinder head was just over a grand in 1979, which was eye watering then.
It has definitely had a lot of money spent on it though. Could be a fun / competitive rally car, depending on which class it would fall into. I wouldn't have a clue about classes these days.

Post by: Migv6 on 06 September 2017, 20:47:22
They were indeed, but what useful purpose do they serve now ? Apart from allowing old farts like me to hark back to the good old days.
The price people will pay for them is crazy.
People are paying 15 grand for a 900 Z1, which were a great bike in 1975, but a well used 2 grand 600 sportsbike will leave one for dead using only 2nd, 3rd, and maybe 4th gears.
They also had rubber frames and wooden brakes, but it doesn't matter, because it allows us to relive our youth.
Incidentally, I really wanted a Fizzy, but my Dad bought me a Casal instead, because his mate owned the franchise or something.
It was a complete pile of crap. Two speed gearchange on the handlebars and did 38mph flat out, on a good day.
I rode it for about a month and then just left it lying up the garden to rot. Reverting to borrowing a mates Dunstall Commando, until I got caught.
Dad had to have (another) day of work to go to court with me. He was not happy.  ::) ;D

If the rider of one of the bikes was half a stone heavier than the other one, then the bike with the lighter rider would win. These things are critical when you have 5bhp, or whatever it was. Who had a Fizzy? (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-FS1-E-Fizzy-1975-Barn-Find-Big-Project/142498065057?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&clk_rvr_id=1302910679597&rmvSB=true)  8)

Ap50 went faster and handled better  ;)

If the rider of one of the bikes was half a stone heavier than the other one, then the bike with the lighter rider would win. These things are critical when you have 5bhp, or whatever it was. In truth there was little to choose between the two, but in my experience the Fizzy had the edge over the AP50.

Agreed!  :y

Although one of my mates had an MZ 50cc which was Czechoslovakian and was the fastest 50 around!  8)

I had a Kawasaki AE50 which had been tinkered with and was almost as fast, but I could never quite keep up with the MZ or another mates Fizzy.  ::)
.

The gerella, gillera, and fantic's were even faster, any thing Italian, was faster than the japs, but needed more looking after, very tempremental.

I was looking at these before I bought my 370Z, the only one in budget needed work doing and that was also 16k  :o, decent ten valve cars were around the 25k mark and the twenty valve cars are fetching 40k if mint.

Really wish I`d bought one years ago when I had the opportunity  :'(

I should imagine most of them succumbed to tin-worm.. even the regular HFs are now rocketing in value as the Integrales are unattainable for regular folk.

The much-admired(for some god forsaken reason) Essex V6 is a straight bolt in. Even people who know what they're looking at have to count the plug leads to be sure. Of course, a 3.0l in a mk1 Cortina(which is what the Corsair is underneath) is not a pleasant experience. That's until the timing gear strips, or the oil-pump drive rounds off.

That's very generous of you Aaron ;D

Considering that the bodywork was clearly pieced together from existing parts(the roof and side windows are very familiar, and I could probably name the rear quarters), snotting a partial sill repair in place is just papering over the cracks. Despite that, it's not bad looking although the Beetle running gear is a serious turn off.

I bet you looked more like this, though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeLi2TEvMII

Dress sense included (my favourite, though, is the very "French" use of the seatbelt...)

What a great example of why "drug dealer" tyres and automatic gearboxes have made driving dull. :y

Ideal winter car, the Supra. ;D

A mate of mine bought one years back, but only because he oversteered into a lamp post on the test drive and decided that purchase was the best way out of the predicament. ::)

 ;D ;D ;D I have a soft spot for the Mk3 & Mk4, but I don't think I have a bank balance large enough for one! 80s & 90s Japanese cars make an Omega look positively rust-free..

Though if money were no object, I'd have one of these as a project: http://www.mzr-datsun240z.co.uk/en/

I was offered a 240z for £70 in 1979. It was 7 or 8 years old, but far too much rust to be worth bothering with, at the time.  ::)

I've always loved the 240z, but memories of my Grandad's brand new 120y in the 1970's, where the tops of the front wings rusted through in 18 months from purchase, have prevented temptation in that area.

Mechanical and electrical gremlins I don't mind, but a bodywork nightmare just wouldn't be fun. :(

My mate had one of these (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/292524739123?clk_rvr_id=1504904309220&rmvSB=true) when he was 19 and doing well for himself.  :y

He put it in a hedge!  ;D

Talking of projects, I was told about a Vauxhall nut in Norn Irn a few days ago who is building replicas of Big Bertha and Baby Bertha from the originals drawings & build sheets.
Apparently his interesting collection includes a mint Chevette HSR.
Next time Im over there, I may be able to go and take a look.  :)

seems entirely reasonable to me :y

We were talking the other day about 4wd Metros; using a Freelander engine, box, transfer box and diff was one solution. I prefer the idea of two 1.8 K-series engines, using an extra MGF subframe(I've an angle grinder and welder) in the back. A 3.6l 4WD Metro for less than £2k sounds dangerous interesting.

Who needs another project when I have the gold shed with its almost non existent handbrake and rotten rear drivers sill and a coolant and oil leak. plenty of work to be getting on with without dragging some other pile home.

That's more like a bit of light relief from a real project. Like a jet Espace or 4WD Metro :y

I did a tour of the factory a couple of years back (a PistonHeads Sunday Service) - fascinating place, and the passenger ride in the Plus 8 was quite exciting (might have had something to do with the leggy lady who was doing the driving, though ;D )
