General Discussion Area / PC failure
« on: 26 October 2019, 16:19:45 »
Pursuant to trying Linux, before trying it, I attempted to replace last months backup on my external backup drive. As the Ashampoo backup was still chuntering away and going nowhere after 12 hours, I re-booted the computer, or tried to. The PC failed to re-boot and indicated boot failure.
Long story short, after many attempts using various methods including my original rescue disc, Win 7 and Win 10 installation files, etc. etc. We decided that the drive needs re-formatting and then re-install programs.
Those of you still engaged will have noticed the flaw in this plan, yep, I lose all my data.
So, using a Linux disc, I have been able to locate all the files on the PC and transfer them to a 1TB drive, and, after much googling, have actually managed to transfer my Email programme, Thunderbird, with all its data and address books to a laptop where it is running OK
However, I am still unable to establish, or convert, which are the Linux files containing my Softmaker/Textmaker text files, or my Firefox Bookmarks. I can find individual .docx files, but have no idea how to transfer these into Textmaker now running on my laptop. I am unable to reformat the PC until sure that I have all my data.
Unfortunately my go to Linux guy is undergoing treatment for cancer and is unable to help at present.
Any helpful suggestions from you IT whizz kids would be gratefully received.  :y

General Discussion Area / Windows 7
« on: 09 October 2019, 10:38:09 »
As Win 7 is dying, I am about to try Linux. In my disc management, there is a partition saying:

System Reserved
100Mb NTFS
Healthy, System, Active, Primary Partition

What is this for?
The options to delete or extend volume are unavailable. :-\ :-\ :-\

Not having sold anything valuable for several years, what is the safe way of accepting payment, apart from cash, these days? :y

I'm not impressed with the cheap one I bought as it doesn't auto shut-off, and no zero faciility, which wouldn't matter if it read zero!
Any recommendations for a replacement? The mini Avo I bought in Change Alley 50 years ago has now packed up. :(

Are any of the firms offering mobile service for dent removal to be recommended?
SWMBO has a small dent in the boot lid (caused by me reverse parking into an unseen post  :-[ :-[ :-[) which I think might be pulled out. :-\ :-\ :-\

As my Avatar, like me, is fading away, what is the preferred way of loading them now, as I believe photobucket must have removed mine. ???

Neighbour without Freesat wishes to access TV catchup on her TV. She can do this on Freeview but needs Powerline adapters to connect her modem to the TV via ring main. I use Aztech which work well. Can anyone recommend better/cheaper W.H.Y.? :y

Omega General Help / Starting issue
« on: 01 September 2019, 17:38:09 »
For the last year or two, occasionally when starting the 3.2, particularly if it has been used within the last hour or so, on the first turn of the key, nothing happens, no lights dim etc. On the second attempt, it starts fine. I have replaced the ign switch, no difference. Any thoughts? :-\

General Car Chat / Push-me-pull-you

Driving down the outside lane of a dual carriageway this AM, I approached a car in the inside lane which appeared to be driving in reverse at about 65 mph. As I got closer I realised I was looking at the front of what appeared to be a Rover 75, and yep, travelling at 65 in reverse with no driver or passenger looking at me! As I overtook I discovered the driver facing the front of the other half of the car, also a Rover 75!
There are some wonderful eccentrics in this world. It had me chuckling all the way home ;D

Omega General Help / Centre console switch fascia buttons
« on: 20 August 2019, 17:40:52 »
On my F/L the switchlite buttons feel sticky and mark very easily. Is this age induced deterioration of the surface or has someone before me coated them with something? The first owner had a VX Sureguard treatment!!! :-X
