Do headlight bulbs degrade over time?
« on: 23 November 2009, 14:05:33 »

Topic says it all! Do they?

As a side note, I just ordered H1+H7 nightbreakers + sidelights for just over £35 delivered. Sounds good price to me.

The short answer is yes they do. Cannot remember exactly why, but I am sure someone on here will no.

Think it is something to do with metal coming off the prongs and adhearing to the glass, probably not explaine the correctly.

Doesn't matter what use they are intended for, ALL lamps degenerate over time.

Have been wondering why my headlights are so dim compared to the others around me - still the ones from factory. Nightbreakers on the way though, should get my sunglasses out I guess  ;D

VERY expensive, that is.
I bought Nightbreakers off ebay from wattbulbs £10.90 delivered per set H1, delivered next day, LED sides are also on ebay-mine were £12 delivered for 10.

DON'T buy Nightbreakers if you can find Philips Xtreme-they are MUCH better, but more expensive-I paid £16.68 (with ebay discount voucher worth £1.53) for the H7 main beams, delivered from aceparts_uk

Wattbulbs also very good when the Nightbreakers filaments dropped out after one week-sent new ones before I sent the old ones back-good seller.

So-buy Philips Xtreme over Nightbreakers-brighter, less patchy light pattern, last longer.

Both wattbulbs and aceparts_uk recommended on ebay.

Can't remeber which seller I got the LEDs from.

Hope this helps  :y

In addition, as per title-the Philips ones last and last and do not degrade, Osrams ok, but fail.

LED sides fail regularly (4-6mths average) but worth the hassle to lose the horrid yellow originals which look even worse next to the whiter upgrade bulbs.

Have used powerbulbs to source bulbs, they are very good but more expensive than wattbulb or aceparts_uk on ebay, both of which are exemplary sellers.

Cheers  :y

Thanks for the recommendation, will use Philips when my nightbreakers fail  ::)

For LEDs, I had them on my motorbike and it failed few times. A mate of mine said you need to put a resistor if using LEDs to limit the current, otherwise they fail quite often. Didn't try it though as I went back to normal bulbs.

Mine are cheap Chinese imports, but pretty sure you can buy ones with resistor built in, that are marketed as "no Audi fault code LEDs".  Hmmm  :-/
