Title: Lord Opti's £10k Mid Life Crisis Car
Post by: Sir Tigger KC on 18 January 2015, 23:14:21
Lord Opti's cash is burning a hole in his pocket and he's feeling the urge to spend it on a flashy car that should turn female heads.  :)

He's going to keep his MV6 so it dosn't have to be practical, but it does have to be suitable for a daily drive (ish).  £10,000 is his budget and it will probably help if it has potential to be a money pit!  :D  ;D

So lets help the poor old fella out with some suggestions.  ;)  Here's mine.  :y

A 928 would add an extra whiff of desperation. And most of them were automatic.

If he wants to burn notes then get a Range Rover.

If you want comfort and a big smile then I highly recommend a supercharged Jag!

O.K then......where to begin? ;D

The 911 is a Beetle in a posh frock.......so no. :-\

The 928 is good. This is a maybe. :y

As for The Range Rooney. I don't live in Cheshire or Chelsea for that matter, where it's legendary off-road capabilities are never tested by the Gucci clad WAGS who drive them. So no. :-\ :-\

Ah...the supercharged Jag. I could be tempted by one of these. Subtle yet accomplished. A real sleeper. :y :y :y

That would spoil the image for me the rest of us.
Seriously, a 928 is the only Porsche that has any appeal to me, but an XJS easily overwhelms that. An early one for the full effect.

I was looking for a Lotus Esprite but they're all out of Lord Opti's £10,000 budget, so how about this:-

This at first may seem an odd choice but for being wafted along the lanes of Lincolnshire by your chauffeur whilst holding court with your lady friend in the back it would take some beating. Used to be the mayor of Aberdeens car.

LPG'd - a great plus.   here are some selected sound bites

The rear section can be separated by an electric Privacy glass screen which works very slowly
Lack of use is the issue behind its slow movement But with a little assistance it does go up and down  :o
The whole compartment is kitted with soft foamy type Cream coloured material and is very bright, warm And inviting.

Warning - This car draws attention!

Offered for sale slightly over budget but nothing Opti couldn't negotiate on ;D

I'm thinking £10k is merely ''loose change'' to Opti. Surely, something in the £500k bracket would be more suitable for a daily driver???

You boys are certainly giving me food for thought. :y

Weds......Great pictures of your 928. I really do like these germanic old dowagers. :y

Jaguar XJS. I hated these when they replaced the E-Type in 1975. I've mellowed since then and believe XJS prices to be on the rise. The convertible version is too 'effete' for my liking though.

Jaguar XK 4.2 coupe. I imagine that anything I could afford was previously owned by a'footballist'.....Michael Owen perhaps. Nice car, but no thanks.

BMW 840/850. Hmmm, these do hold a certain appeal. Not expensive either.

Mr Varche. The Daimler Limo is more suited to the delectable mistress Lizzie than myself. :-* :-* :-*

The Lotus Excel. Another left field choice. Have you seen what 'Emma Peel' Elans are worth these days. With such piss poor intesrest rates this may prove a wise investment. Either that or a money pit. ;)

The MV6 will remain my everyday car.

I'd like a car I can enjoy but one that will rise in value rather than depreciate. It's a big ask. :y

Can anyone find an Alfa Montreal or AC 428 for £10,000? ;D

Not a chance!!!!! The interesting, flashy but cheap stuff like Espadas and Ferrari 400s started climbing several years ago.Even the Zagato bodied Bristol's have shot up.
And the days of a usable Interceptor for 3grand are gone too, that money won't even buy a wreck. Both of those are actually affordable to run as the Mopar power means durability and low cost.

The trick is to predict the future and 'invest' in such cars before they become desirable and sought after. :y

I don't think there's much left to do that with. When even common, couldn't even give it away stuff like Allegros have jumped in price(don't laugh, they have) the more desirable stuff did it some time ago.

At £4000 that is certainly true.

The 16V version had over 150 BHP and made for a very quick car almost 30 years ago.

The Mk2 Astra was pretty light when compared to today's model.

As far as I'm aware the TVR S3 is still for sale. No surprise with a £3950 asking price for a far from resolved motor car.

I quite like the Alpina BMW. The one with the 4.6 litre lump in the handsome E39 body. These are pretty rare.

£8-£10000 buys something just that little bit different. :y

Two cars stand out......The Alfa and the Maserati. I'm sure that both would give many miles of trouble free and inexpensive motoring. :D

The Maserati is orgasmic. All this for the price of a delivery mileage Daewoo. :y :y

Them TVR give out a lovely exhaust burble  :)

They do indeed.

My understanding is that the 4.5 litre version of the Rover / Buick lump is the best compromise. The 4 litre variant is probably a little sluggish. The full fat 5 litre lump is supposedly a real dog to drive in traffic.

Because TVR mapped their engines to pop and bang a lot rather than to run smoothly. ::)

I would expect the 5.0 lump to be far better given its a long stroke engine (all they do to go from a 3950 is increase the stroke and a very small bore increase if any bore change at all).

Now this could prove to be an excellent investment!  :y

With an advertised purchase price of £5500, hopefully £5000 would secure it, leaving £4500 - 5000 to complete the restoration and stay within budget.  :y  If Lord Opti gets a bit loose with the purse strings on the restoration he's in money pit territory (which fits the brief), but check out the prices of fully restored examples!  Your looking northwards of £15,000!  :o  8)

Obviously our Lord would have to check the condition very carefully, but if it's as described it could be a good buy!  :y

Not that far northwards of £15k though unless they've shot up in the last couple of months.. The estate version is nowhere near as desirable as the saloon, sadly.

Although I do like those.. I could be tempted.
