Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Alternator Problem??
« on: 05 August 2021, 08:12:10 »
Hi,, just setting off on first leg of our holiday - Alternator/Charging light blinked then stayed on. Dashcam switched off a few mins later (low voltage) then engine management light came on. So I got off the motorway and back home asap. Pedal Error code is giving me 0571, which I'm assuming is because of low voltage rather than being the actual fault (0571 is Cruise control/brake switch 'A' circuit malfunction).

Battery is at 11 volts, just enough to start, but no increase when engine is running. Does this sound like alternator, or are there other things I can check first?

Cheers,
Dave

Omega General Help / 2.6 V6 front engine noise
« on: 11 April 2015, 11:25:56 »
Hi all,
I'm getting an odd noise which is difficult to pin down - coming from the front of the engine definitely but can't make out where. Sounds like a mix of chafing and rattling at the same time as if something's loose or wobbly.

I was thinking of removing the aux belt then running the engine again to double-check that something along this belt path is the culprit.

Would this be the right way to proceed, do you reckon?

Cheers,

General Discussion Area / MOT time - thanks for your help!
« on: 03 October 2011, 07:39:36 »
I need to thank the guys on here who've helped me out over the last 12 months (again). Just sailed through the MOT at 41k miles/9 years with no advisories and a "perfect, mate!".

I always get twitchy about MOTs - must be a historical thing from when my car (a 1967 Victor 101) failed every year with increasingly expensive consequences. That was when they used a screwdriver to test the soundness of your sills and floor!

I've started using a local MOTMax - they claim to have no vested interest in finding trivial faults in order to sell you parts you don't need. Mind you, I do check out all that I can first.

Thanks again - it really means a lot.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Alarm troubles
« on: 10 April 2009, 15:17:07 »
Having read many posts about alarm problems and how to resolve them, I was confident that this morning I would replace the batteries in my power sounder and all my problems would go away.

Hmmm...

I'd had the usual symptoms like the sounder going off on its own when I started the car, a full alarm 15 minutes after I parked following a long run - then again an hour later etc. etc. I'd also tried the usual suggestions - ultrasonics, bonnet switch etc. But to no avail. I'd ended up reaching in the back door to lock the car.

So this morning armed with two new NiMH batteries from CPC I disconnected the sounder and waited for ... not a peep. It didn't make a sound, which I thought ominous. Still, I cut open the unit and checked the batteries. Fully charged AND able to stand a 500mA load for a couple of minutes.

I'm stuck. I haven't replaced the unit in the car but I've left the horn in place that was next to it.

Does anyone have any more suggestions? Maybe the sounder itself is just bust? Is it OK to leave it off the car permanently?

Cheers.

Omega General Help / Front disc pads - inside/outside?
« on: 30 July 2011, 10:31:29 »
Fitting new front discs & pads this morning. Genuine GM set. Two of the four pads have a sort of mat on the back plate.

I'm assuming that one pad is on the piston side and one on the caliper side, but which?

I'm leaning towards the mat coated ones being in contact with the caliper. Does anyone have any idea? The 'instructions' don't say either.

Oh, and I took the old ones out without noticing which way round they were.  :-/

Cheers,

Omega General Help / Fuel Consumption Indication 2.6 V6
« on: 03 February 2011, 17:10:16 »
My 2.6 Elite auto always showed 9999.9 mpg on overrun and down hills until recently. Now on overrun it slowly works its way up to about 60 or 70. So it looks to me like the engine's being fuelled during overrun.

Anyone know what I should look for or clean? Is it a breather thing? Or a sensor?

Overall consumption seems a little poorer than before as well, struggling to get to 20 now around town (24+ before).

Any ideas appreciated.
Cheers,

Omega General Help / 2.6 Estate Exhausts
« on: 23 September 2010, 17:26:11 »
Hi, I'm going to be needing a cat-back exhaust system for the 2.6 Estate soon. Eternalcar seems to get a few mentions on here, but they don't specifically do a 2.6 version (plenty of 2.5 bits).

Does anyone know if the 2.5/2.6 are the same?

And also, 'Longlife' sound good on their website (if slightly expensive). Does anyone have an opinion on them? Or maybe Jetex?

Not necessarily needing stainless, more interested in quiet and quality as opposed to anything else.

Cheers,

Omega General Help / Thermostat done - thanks...
« on: 06 June 2010, 16:46:21 »
Just a note to thank the folks on the Forum for their help and for the excellent maintenance guides - I finally succeeded in replacing the thermostat on my V6 Elite this morning.

If I could add my small experience - get the radiator top hose completely off first to get better access, then tackle the B* bolt before doing anything else. If you leave it until later in the job it will grind you down. And it unscrews out of the block at a slight downward angle - not horizontally.

Special mention for Dave Elite for his advice and encouragement. You're a star mate!

Omega General Help / V6 Thermostat Replacement
« on: 26 February 2010, 13:34:03 »
I'm going to have a shot at replacing the thermostat on my Y26SE V6 tomorrow.

I've clued myself up from the maintenance guide on the forum.

My shopping list is: link pipe seal(s), new A/F and the thermostat itself, but do I need to replace the thermostat housing as well? (or does it come as a complete unit?)

Many thanks.

Omega General Help / What's the 'correct' V6 engine temp?
« on: 13 October 2009, 11:26:56 »
2.6 V6 engine - after a 50-mile motorway trip at the weekend, so everything nice and warm, I noticed the temp gauge was just below 80. Turning the aircon OFF or to ECO let it rise slightly to about 90.

I'm sure I remember the normal temp being higher than this, like up to almost 100. Does this point to a thermostat problem or is it normal and it's me that's paranoid?

Not looking forward to a stat change...

Omega General Help / Heater Bypass Valve - done...
« on: 11 August 2009, 09:56:36 »
I want to thank the forum for the guidelines on replacing an HBV. Not only for the actual method, but more for giving me the confidence to tackle it! I spent the first half-hour just looking at it thinking, how the f...?

Something that I noticed that gave away the problem (apart from worsening loss of coolant of course) was that recently the car would take a few turns to start - when usually it was on the first flick. Obviously the leaking coolant was wetting the dis pack nearby.

To get at the HBV, I swung aside the scuttle, removed the brake servo vacuum pipe, removed a black metal bracket over the wiper gear that threatened to lacerate my arm, then completely removed the top hose of the same-side pair going into the valve. After that it was fiddly but straightforward. I used swan-neck pipe pliers to compress the pipe clips.

Maybe just my imagination but the engine does seem to run a lot smoother now. £35 and a couple of hours well spent.

Thanks again.

Omega General Help / Rear suspension knocking
« on: 10 April 2009, 15:26:50 »
I'm having a problem with my nearside rear suspension making a knocking sound as the wheel drops following a bump. It's getting worse and anything like a speed bump or pothole (anything where the wheel goes downwards relative to the body) makes a right clonk.

Should I suspect bushes or shocks or what? There's no wild bouncing at the back that would make me think shocks, but I don't know if that's relevant.

It's a 2002 2.6 Elite Estate - so self-levelling, and done just on 30k miles.
I've not been underneath yet, and wouldn't know what to look at on this suspension layout, so any thoughts would be appreciated.

Newbie Welcome Area / Morning everyone...
« on: 30 January 2009, 08:51:11 »
Hello all,

Just joined the forum after many months of looking through your articles. I've had a 2002 reg Elite 2.6 Estate from new.

Only done 30k, so it's still in good nick (despite the best efforts of my VX dealership to change that!).

Cheers.
DG
