My lovely 2.6 which passed her MOT literally three or four days ago.

Savagely cooked to death on the motorway.

I had a Seat Leon on my arse, so gave it some beans to create some distance before moving back in.

Looked in rear view mirror - loads and loads of white looking smoke.

Was too dangerous to stop (no hard shoulder at that point) so carefully kept going. Smoke seemed to clear. No rise in temp gauge or coolant level warnings.

Three miles before the next junction (services), a load of really nasty ratting, power loss, and dead as a dodo.

Fair to say it’s cooked.

I will be robbing the parts I want to make my 3.2 good, and then breaking it. Real shame but, the paint is poor, and now with a goosed engine, she is toast

Taking the positives, the 2.6 is a dog of an engine, and you're replacing with a 3.2 - which still ain't as good at the 3.0, but still loads better than the 2.6

The Astra G fronted Omegas never grew on me ...... I always liked the curved swage line across the bonnet of the preface lift cars

So what do you think went wrong?  98K miles is low for a V6.  Obviously wasn't the belt but also doesn't sound like just one piston/valve failing.

I was thinking a “ spares or repair” type vehicle. Go back a few years and you could pick one up for £200. Best. I could find was. 3.0 litre for £560. Then you have all the hassle of trailer collection and disposal and the actual swap over.

The secondhand price of runners seems to be £1500 upwards. No doubt bouyed by the general rise in price of S/H cars

You’d never get £1500 for this one with the paintwork even when mechanically sound.

Plus I can rob parts needed to get the 3.2 Elite project on the road, saving  at least £400

Plus I just made £300 by weighing in the cats off it and selling a couple of interior bits. I reckon done right I will see upwards of £600 just from breaking it …..

Hence my logic of using two cars to make a goodun out of the Elite. Which is lush. With a stainless exhaust

According to DVLA my car is blue,I'd call it grey the official GM name according to the colour code is Graphite II mica.Must have been a very popular colour as I've never seen another

My first Omega was the opposite, it looked blue, everyone thought it was blue, but it was actually listed as Magic Grey.

Very hard to get a working header tank sensor as I recall.  I thought it was the reed switch failing on mine but on checking 3 tanks it is usually the magnet that falls off the float.  So second hand tanks work when you turn them upside down but not when installed.  Fiddly to pull off the float, glue the magnet back on and refit but worth it to have a working sensor.

The original expansion tank on my 3.2 lasted around sixteen years in my ownership but in the last year of ownership I fitted two brand new tanks, purchased from a main dealer, and the float fell off both of them. Quite ironic, as I only purchased a new tank to make the engine bay look better.

Total purchase price for both cars was £2460.

Since that picture was taken I had the unfortunate opportunity to have the front end “restored” with   a whole re spray back to the doors, due to a low speed shunt.  Just need the whole back end updated now, but without an accident involved!!

Looking at the wheels on the one beside yours its a CD spec car.
Mine had around 185000 on the clock when those pics were taken. Its nearly on 199,000 now.

I've seen Mig's in the flesh, albeit a few years ago now, and a pretty tidy example it is too

I think I've seen LZ's as well, but memory is fuzzy, as I was nursing a proper bad hangover that day.  TB's top tip learnt on that day is not attempt cam cover gaskets or flashing 3.0l EPROMS when the eyes won't focus
