Code readers
« on: 06 January 2008, 22:41:15 »

Happy new year guys
Had nelly now a few weeks and she is going good thanks to the help you guys  :y
Now I think I want a code reader and there are several at the moment on flea bay and others ranging from 20 quid up. Now yes I have read the threads on here on polish and the like but I was wondering if you guys would take a look and advise. No I haven't supplied a link as there are loads just to say they are listed in garage equip under diagnostics.
i don't want to remap or do anything fancy just to be able to read the codes when and if me lights start flashing. Also I need to know which connector I need just a hand held one
anyway guy would appreciate your views and if anyone has a particular one how helpful it is

Cheers again guys   :y

at a 95 year car, none of the generic ones will work,

So you are either looking at expensive ones, or the 'cheap tech 2' which plugs into a (reasonable spec, with a com port) laptop, at £25-£35 with the dodgy software....

Or just a paperclip ;)

Budget?

Free - paperclip - engine only

< £100 - cheapo tech2 - code read most onboard computers, sometimes in English

£300 ish - Opelscan - code read most onboard systems, program keys. Live data capable.

£3.5k ish - Tech2 - code read all onboard systems, program all programmable items.  Live data capable. Same as dealer uses.

Then you get into the expensive stuff.

This is the weirdest thing. On my way to work this morning I was thinking, like you do, that it would be a good idea to have a review of the various readers along with their capabilities, costs, ease of use and connectivity issues given the reported problems with USB connections.

I was just about to start a new thread and blow me down this appeared.

So, to all those people out there with various readers:

What have you got?

How much did it cost?

Where did you get it from?

What will it do? e.g. read codes, reset airbags, recode keys etc.

How does it connect? e.g. Serial cable or USB

How easy is it to use? Is the interface in English and is it understandable?

Would you recommend it to other owners?

Please add any further information that you think may be of use but, if possible, please try to be objective.

Tech2 is the standard which all of these machines try to emulate and all of them, I guess, come up short but most of us can't afford to spend £000's on a code reader that we will only use once or twice a year with luck.

I await your reviews with bated breath.  :y

If I can get my grubby mits on an opelscan for a few days, I am more than happy to write up a comparison.  I'd need to check if I've still got a cheapo tech2 knocking around, else I'll have to borrow one of them as well.

I have a pair of 1998 cars here, and I'm sure Tunnie would let me loose on his facelift 2.2 and 2.5s (just dont tell him  :-X)

Now comes with USB connector.

They are working on a CAN BUS model thats used on the new Vectra
/ Astra.
