Looks to be an AR25 from a U25TD or X25TD

there should be a metal plate riveted to it confirming.

Ouch!! This means I 'may' have done 20K on an AR25 with a chipped 2.5TD! I guess I can expect expiry anytime now! I haven't been underneath to check yet due bad weather, but Vauxhall tell me that that gearbox 'should' be fitted to my car. However, I need to get under to check.
What is the difference between U and X?

Hi JB, I have spent some time underneath trying to identify my box, and can see no plate anywhere visible, using lights and dental mirrors. There is only 'GM 55 2 B' embossed on the side. Could you give me any clue as to where the ident plate should be? Vauxhall Garage were no help.

Thanks

Passenger side, about half way along the box, its a dog-tag style plate which is almost impossible to read, you need to jam you head inbetween the box and the gap in the chassis and you can just about read it  :y

Aaaaaargh!!!  I have found the plate and it is an AR25!!!
So I have actually covered 23000 miles chipped to 170ish BHP on an AR25. Is this a record? And has anyone got a good AR35 box and someone with facilities to fit it anywhere near Swindon?

Going by your location and screen name I'm guessing you either were in or are in the RAF .. if you are still in Lyneham used to have an excellent car club, loads of facilities, it was round the back of the Airmens Mess.

I'm afraid I don't have the facilities to drop a gearbox .. :(
