Auto Box ECU upgrade
« on: 07 February 2007, 19:56:26 »

Having seen this mentioned on a few occasions, can it be done to my 96 (PReg) TD Estate?
If how & who, or is it not relevant to what you guys refer to as 'Tractors'?
What are the benefits from such an uprade?

The benefits in the software upgrade in the ECU are a much smoother change, and apparently less 'slip' in the box.  Huge difference.

Irrelevent as far as you are concerned, as pre 98 cars do not have updatable firmware on g/box...

Is there a way of checking what version you have without tech2? Something like sticking a finger in the cigar lighter while holding sports button with your nose and operating the bonnet alarm switch with your foot?

I'm sure I've seen something about how to tell... or maybe I was dreaming  :o

Unless yours has been updated at some point (unlikely), you ain't got the smoother one.

Only way to get specific version is real Tech2 or cheapo one if its in a good mood at the time...

As the boxes are apparently mechanically the same, is it possible to get just a later ECU and flash it with the revised software?

Righto,

When I get the new car sorted, I'll hunt about for a later ECU, and we'll Tech2 it and find out? ;D

Irrelevent as far as you are concerned, as pre 98 cars do not have updatable firmware on g/box...

How does it make it change smoother?

I assume it tells the engine ecu to retard the ignition at the point of change....to make it smoother....and something the earlier versions didnt do?  :-/ Or this only possible on facelifts/coil pack ignition setup?

Drove my merc today.....now that is a smooth gearbox.....far smoother than my omega....drive it normally and you carnt even feel the gear changes....you only know its changed gear by watching the rev counter! ....Something merc is good at! autoboxes! Crap at manuals tho!

Apparently it can adjust oil pressure etc in the valves using a PWM technique, rather than on or off...

Should be flashable, as no doubt mini facelift.  Price list at top of each section - 'TheBoy's Tech2 Price List'
