Omega General Help / Bust the ashtray
« on: 13 February 2010, 14:01:50 »
Hello,i plugged one of those little electric tyre inflators/compressors  into the cigarette lighter socket in the large ashtray in the bottom of the centre console, applied too much pressure and messed up the mechanism(went extremely stiff afterwards). Not to be beaten i wiggled and pushed until i heard what sounded like something snapping.Bottom line is it travels smoothly but wont lock into place closed. The question is do i need to remove it to inspect the mechanism and if so how do i do it?This is spoiling my very fine car,if it needs the whole unit it will get one.

32 miles in 1 hour 45 mins is avereage speed 18.28 mph. I have 405 miles in my trip computer with an average speed of 22.0 mph. half of the miles covered were motorway cruising up to 80 mph, the rest were what i call urban cycle(around town).
If you are spending periods of this journey nose to tail or stopped then you have to have periods of driving at least up to the motorway speed limit and there are no motorways on an urban cycle.
Out of interest reset the trip computer when you have reached a part of the journey where you are unlikely to get above 30 mph again and let the computer calculate consumption from there to your workplace.
My consumption is reading 21.9 over the last 405 miles.Another 120 mile motorway trip might see that rise to 24-25,another 120 miles urban will probably take it down to 19 ish.
I tried  driving economically for a week and it just pissed me off and made me want to sell the car.Now i remember why i bought it in the first place and enjoy every mile!

Down the M1 and around the A406 is not "around town",if you can get 26 mpg from ANY petrol omega on the urban cycle you stand to make a fortune as people will pay for your magic secret!

Urban driving in a 2.6 V6 = 17.2mpg. Thats manufacturers figures with a perfectly tuned warm engine, perfect spark plugs etc, maybe even a premium octane fuel. So take a more used vehicle, cold starts, more traffic about and longer waits at light etc and 15mpg wouldnt be unusual. These engines seem to slurp petrol when accelerating so unless your driving at a steady speed for regular stretches or going downhill your mpg will suffer.

Omega General Help / Re: Tyre pressure loss - is it the wheel?
« on: 12 February 2010, 08:45:34 »
Alloys start oxidising on the inner rim where the tyres seals, this process forms a light crust which is porous,a good tyre fitter will always give this area a sanding over and remove previous sealant before reapplying sealant and fitting the new tyre.Very common complaint with alloy wheels.

As my previous post was not very constructive, here is a bit more info.
Its generally thought of as a bit of a no no to replace just one side of the cars suspension once wear has taken place as replacing one side only theoretically leads to an uneven set up.This can cause instability/uneven breaking etc.(basically not as safe as it should be)However in practice its done a lot and is not illegal. If your pocket will only stretch to replacing one shock to get the car back on the road then who am i to judge though i would prefer not to be driving on a road near you.

If you are going to drive at normal speeds and dont mind a bit of tyre noise(probably but not guaranteed)then budget tyres ought to be fine.
Ask the tyre shop what are the cheapest shite they sell and then ask for the ones next up from that! Cant go wrong.

if you mean the enduro tyres 235/45/17 on ebay at £160 for 4,cracking price. However it will stop you enjoying your car knowing you have put cheap rubber on.

i am half tempted to try maxxis victra asymmet M35 ,i like the tread pattern(can be seen on camskill tyres site) but would prefer to hear some feedback on them first, otherwise i bite the bullet and get continental SC3.,so app. £250-300 a set or   £450-500,respectively.the difference is £4 a week over a year to have the best!

Search for threads about tyres, plenty recently, soon have you totally confused. the bottom line though is cheap tyres are crap. i have the same size as you and they are triangle/backdiamond,identical tread, chinese made. i have no confidence in them whatsoever and recently changing front to back got rid of what appeared to be a bearing noise from the front, now it sounds like a bearing/diff noise at the back, dont know which tyre it is thats doing it but these things can be expected from cheap tyres. i worked a while fitting tyres and got no complaints fitting maxxis tyres and a lot of the customers were taxi drivers.they are a budget tyre but appeared to be acceptable. mid range tyre maybe Vredestein/Toyo. the other bottom line is there is no cheap good tyre at this size.
