Miggy's been stationery for last 80 days!
« on: 02 February 2010, 19:16:01 »

Due to work commitments i have relocated to the sleepy coastal town of mombasa in east africa, of course the miggy came with me.
But due to unforseen circumstances and problem with paperwork the car was held up with customs for 80 days including shipping times from uk to mombasa.

Question is,what do i need to do to keep the car in good shape since it has been stationery for too long. Oil and filter i guess is a must. anything else?
Any advice will be appreciated?

Chock it up & either remove the wheels or take the weight of the car off them, as prolonged weight on one spot will deform the tyre wall and also cause deterioration of the tyre rubber. :y

Brand new cars sit in the fields for longer. Bet they just turn the key and drive.

No, its already been stood for 80 days, OP wants to know what best way to re-introduce it to movement. I would certainly check tyres for wall cracks, drain, flush & refill coolant, and normal service items :y ::) 8-)

Not sure if your car has been kept inside or out, but here a car left outside for a long time unused would have a bad effect on the brake discs, making them rusty and using the car could damage the brake pads.  :(

Just a look at the battery cos it may well be low due to evaporation and need topping up with de-ionised water, tyres for cracks etc and don't forget to clean off the disk brakes. Check the Air Filter and Pollen filter and look for anything that may have crawled in and took up home.
Nice gentle drive with music off, ears and eyes wide open for a few miles and if it drives ok it probably is.
Apart from that just plain old common sense cos they stood for months on end, sometimes over a year before first sale anyway!

Good point about the brake discs and pad, i can hear a squeal as i brake coming from the front discs...they were replaced last year with genuine GM Discs and pads (about 3000 miles ago). Clean the discs with?
Apart from that the miggy behaved itself very well and just started straight away...no problems at all. Just  drove 350 miles today.

Brakes should clean as you first use them

If you really want a bit of work you can easily clean the disks yourself with a bit of abrasive paper and water, or a wire brush lightly. I have used both without damage and by gently tapping the edges of the disks (the outer circumference edge) with a hammer the scale comes off the edges nicely. Don't hit it hard, just gentle taps does it.
Obviously give the pads a wash in a bit of soapy water to get rid of the rust that will have accumulated by braking and dry them off.
Happy motoring, but look regularly at the air filters!
