I've recently had a missfire when planting my right foot that's been steadily getting worse.  So I stripped it down and fitted new plugs and leads, checked the dispack which looked OK but had water on it, so I dried it out and gave the top of it a good coat of silicone filling all the recesses.

Put it all back together, started it up and it's running really rough! dugga, dugga, pop, dugga, dugga, dugga, pop ........ It starts OK, just rough....

I'm getting code 19 which indicates the crank sensor has gone, but I'm finding it abit strange that this has just happened after a strip down.....     The dispack is a pattern one and looked OK and I popped it in the oven (low heat) for a bit to dry out the silicone so I'm wondering if this has damaged it? It didn't get very hot though....

I'm just wondering if there's anything else that would give code 19 other than a cranksensor? Could I have goosed the dispack by warming it in the oven? Do crank sensors go suddenly or was the original missfire a symptom of a failing crank sensor? 

Just thought I'd check, before spending out on a cranksensor! Many thanks as always!!

Would go for a Vx or Bosch dispack personally

if the patten dispack is the same as original, then if you cook it the wax inside may have melted to the bottom, and maybe giving  you a ruff start and idel. the wax keeps the coils in place.

They are actualy epoxyed in place.

Remember, the DIS pack is where the Crank sensor connection is so if its old and tired it might have disturbed the aged wiring.

Might also be worth double checking the plug leads are on the right way round but crank sensor is certainly not long to this world, as said.

New crank sensor fitted..... but no difference!! 

I must have buggered the dispack when I put it in the oven.  Maybe it was on it's way out anyway, causing the original misfire...

New dis pack fitted today and normal service has returned!    and looking on the bright side, I've now got a spare cranksensor.....

Can the crank sensor affect an automatic gearbox?? 

After fitting the new dispack yesterday and putting it all back together, she was running fine so I put the original cranksensor back in to keep the new one as a spare, and she still ran fine. 

I didn't take her out for a run last night as it was wet and I wanted the sealant around the scuttle to dry out.  So today I've taken her up the road and all's well engine wise 

However, when I got to abit of dual carriageway and put my foot down, it juddered and the rev counter swung wildly, took my foot off abit and it was OK.  Foot down again and same thing happens and I get 'Automatic gearbox' message on the MID.  It then went into what I guess is limp mode all the way home.  When I got back, I paperclipped it and still getting code 19, but that's all...

Havn't had time to put the new cranksensor back in today, is it worth doing??

One of the things the crank sensor does is to tell the computers what the engine speed is, if they don't get accurate data they start to "guess" .

The TCM (Transmission control module) tries to match car speed with engine speed (put extremely simply as it does a great deal more).

If it doesn't "know" the engine speed it cannot match them, so will enter "limp mode".

Your last description suggests crank signal ok for a while then gave an error, engine coughed and spluttered, TCM could not follow so it pinged up a failure

19 is telling you to change the sensor.... all problems will probably depart once that is done.

Refitted the new cranksensor and all is now good!!    Well that all turned into abit of a palaver!!  but thanks for all the help and advice!!
