Silly question. How do you operate cruise control
« on: 02 September 2015, 23:13:27 »

Just bagged myself a 2.5td estate elite. Loving all the extra gadgets that I didn't have in my cd td.

Anyways there are a couple of electrical gremlins but I'll get round to sorting them out. So not sure of I'm being a dope and don't know how to get the cruise control to go on or if it's not working.

Can someone give me a quick run down of how it works, thanks

Press the button on end of the indicator, one with nobble. Press it again goes faster. One with dimple slows the car. Big one underneath cancels it.

Along with clutch and brake pedal, this also disables cruise.

You might want to read the manual though  :y

Petrol models need you to be going 18 (iirc) mph or faster for it to work, unsure if this applies to diesels, but its something to be aware of when testing.

Also touching the throttle temporarily, it remembers the speed you set it at, and allows the car to return to this speed after you have released the throttle pedal. This is intended for overtaking. Also touching the brake pedal cancels it.

Tip is it takes a second or two to kick in. I find best to hold the throttle pedal where it is, touch the 'on' button, wait a couple of secs, then release, otherwise you get an awkward surging sensation as the comp reads the speed, you slow by say 3 mph, it actuates the mechanism to hold revs appropriate for the original set speed, realises you're doing 3mph too slow, then gives a little stab of throttle to bring you back up to the original speed. Slight 'bunny-hop' sensation which can feel like you're on a driving lesson.

Also you can use the 'go' button as a throttle pedal. Just hold it in (over 18-ish mph) and the car will accelerate, in an Auto this is particularly delightful experience as you've no gear changing to worry about. I find the way it speeds up is neither too slow to be glacial/boring, nor make the instantaneous fuel consumption drop to 7mpg, as it does when I use the loud pedal!!!

DBG, thanks for that "throttle-holding" tip; I never knew that and I've used cruise control for years!

:) You're welcome. Personally I love it, and I use Cruise all the time, but being able to move from a theoretical 20 to 120 mph with your feet comfortably nestled into the carpet, by operating a single button feels like something very space age to me. I also love the way the throttle pedal actually moves down as you accelerate, just like KITT in Knight Rider!!  :y  :y

Tested and not working. Like mentioned there's a couple other electrical gremlins including memory seats working but heat not.

1st port of call will be the fuse box as I discovered a couple of fuses in a pocket so fingers crossed it's an easy fix.

If not a fuse any suggestions?

Thanks

Being a TD, I wouldn't mind betting its had a new indicator stalk...  ...and the wrong one fitted.

That would be my first call as well, the 2.5TD's use a BMW Resistive Pad type switching against normal on / off contact switch as used in the normal VX Engined Omega's.

Even if its the original type, they get tired over a while, or as TB's states its been replaced with a VX type one.

Could be the case it's been replaced as it's real crisp and clicks real sharp. What way can I tell for sure that it actually has cruise control?

If it doesn't, is it much of a job retrofitting it in?

The TD is one of the few Omega's where just fitting the correct Stalk wins you a Cruise Control feature irrespective of model spec, as its already enabled in the ECU (in almost all cases).

If you have a DVM or Volt Meter handy, you can disconnect the Stalk plug and measure the Stalk across the two wires, fairly sure from memory there a resistive value even in idle mode, pressing any of the stalk buttons will change the resistive value, where as a normal stalk your be measuring open / closed switch contacts.

Fairly sure I did a 'How to check your TD Stalk is working' thread somewhere in FAQ Section but can't seem to find it now.

First check if the trailing wire from the stalk is 2 or 3 wire (just remove upper cowling)
