Hard wire to Tomtom
« on: 04 December 2007, 22:07:32 »

Where is the best place to pick up the wiring for a tomtom satnav ?I dont want the wires all over the place and it looks messy with it plugged into the ciggy lighter socket,so where is it best sited and the best place /wires to break into for power.

Thought it might work by buying another plug in ciggy cable with usb plug on end, then cutting off plug ,attaching inline fuse and then connecting into cars electrics ??but where and what is best..permenant live or switched with ignition?

I've been thinking about getting power to the drivers cubby hole, could be a nice place to hide the wiring.

Hi Jimbo..might be worth buying a ciggy lighter socket thingy and wiring it into the main fuse board on a ignition live feed..then just using the tomtom giggy plug and wire and hidding it all in the flap down drivers side cubby hole..only problem i have with that is where else do i keep my sunglasses as really usefull place for them

I use a PDA. Mounted on the left of console with a no holes Dashmount kit.  Wiring goes to phone kit, which itself is feed from the Vx phone prewiring...

Although my sat nav is not a tom tom I  have already done this to my car it is much neater  :y
I removed the cig lighter plug from the lead ,and have threaded the lead around the center dash vent and down to the back of the radio . It is much easier to do with the center console removed but still takes a fair bit of fishing to get the wire down .
DO NOT CONNECT THE LEAD DIRECTLY TO 12V, the plug is usually a step down trnsformer the sat nav is only 5v but check what ever you have .
I opened up the lighter plug and removed the circuit board from inside reconnected the  the output wires to the sat nav . Personally I  have wired directly to  a permanent live so the sat nav is constantly on charge when left in the car alternativley wire it to ignition controlled live . I have picked up the feed for the radio via a fuse very little extra current is drawn by the charger . My sat nav has been wired this way for the last six months with no problems
JUST CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE SAT NAV FROM ITS CHARGER IT POSSIBLY IS NOT 12V AND YOU WILL POP THE SAT NAV IF YOU STICK 12V ON TO IT

Thanks LLF64 and The Boy,for your advise.
My plan ,after reading the notes re stepped down voltage ,is to buy a retro fit female ciggy lighter lead.Hard wire that into a live feed ignition switched wire and an earth ,and then mount the housing above the footwell area of the passenger side centre console. That will then allow for the Tomtom power cable to be plugged directly in without disrupting any circuit boards etc.
I will then feed the usb end,as suggested up behind the centre wood effect console and bring it out around the opassenger side centre air vent.It was then my intention to buy a satnav air vent mount so the unit is in the middle of the car, but not screen mounted as I think it looks too taxi like, hopefully giving a tidy and practical installation without too much grief.
Am sure I have read somewhere that you can buy units which allow Tomtom satnavs to be placed in almost like a phone base charger and then lifted off when you need without the need to remove plugs etc..has anybody had any experience of this type?.
Any other fitting advise greatly appreciated ,before I attempt the above.

I have my unit attached just to the left of the dash I have not used the supplied window mount well not all of it just the part that holds the sat nav . I have a short piece of 20x20 stainless box section which the articulated bit just fits into . This also allows the cable torun through it hiding it even more . I will take a picture tomorrow and post it up so you can see what I have done . My unit only has a power connector and this simply unplugs if I need to remove the unit .
