CateraMV6 3.0L 24V6 Engine Pics
« on: 15 November 2007, 04:24:34 »

Well I decided to post up some engine pictures.  These are from about a year ago when i got her... mind you that engine had 60K miles on it... and it was clean as hell... today its got over 85 and it looks the same... and maybe even cleaner...  ::) I will post some pictures for comparison later..

That engine put down 195hp at the rear wheels...

These are from the 3.0L but they are not mine... found them on some random site...

These are from an engine that was removed from another catera... and it was fro sale on ebay... figured someone can use these pics to figure out where stuff is...  Hope it helps...

FBW Fly by wire
or
DBW Drive by wire

means electronic throttle control as opposed to the 'old fashioned' cable

I thought it had something to do with the coil packs... as I think all 2000-up models have the DIS... Distributor-less Ignition System.... or as some people call it Coil on Plug design.

The DBW is kinda nice as it adapts to your driving style so it helps with the throttle control, the only thing I hate is the fact that it takes full control under zero traction conditions..  Another nice thing is the cruise control has no additional components so its virtually fault free and your gas pedal dose not float as the old systems... it just sits there at the highest position.

Two things being confuddled slightly...

DBW variants have the coilpacks spread over the plugs with no High Tension leads supplying the electricity for a spark.

UK, cable throttle variants have a DISpack on the rear of the block, still without a standard 'distributor' but do have HT leads supplying the sparks.

Check out some of the engine piccys on here to see the differences.....   :y

Edit: Why can't my engine bay be that clean.  ::)

In that case I certainly have the DBW system..  :-?  Hey guys what oil are you supposed to use with the 3.0L... I read the owners manual and it says SYNTHETIC Only... and I started using that oil since I got her and after a while on cold starts I started getting a little smoke out of the exhaust... then I tried some additives and went away and now after the last oil change it does it again... I wonder if the previous owner never did the Syn Oil... and also I found some old receipts when gas was still in the mid 1$ range.. and it looks like they used only 87 ocatane on this when it clearly states that minimum is 93..friggin idiots...

semi synth works well here, good cost/performance balance, particularly GM's own.

Steam from exhaust is normal.  Engine designed for beter combustion which produces water vapour.  Large, twin pipe exhaust creates large cold area which takes time to warm up, jence steam from rear...

Well what it is is simply a puff of blue smoke right at start up that goes away in a matter of seconds... and then it runs clean but it pufs every time the engine has been cooled down... My friend is a gasket designer at federal mogul and he explained that prolonged use of regular mineral oils tends to produce deposits in your engine which would normally keep leaks from occurring and if you switch to synthetic later on that oil would clean sludge up and allow for some oil to leak through and thats how people get leaks..  I think that my exhaust valve seals are leaking a little bit and that is what causes the puff of smoke in the morning...

agreed.  initial blue smoke on startup or after prolonged idle tends to indicate valve stem seals...
