Note: This is for a Prefacelift...

I would like to make use of the blank on the passenger's door (that on LHD cars would house the electric mirror controls) by fitting an electric window switch. As far as I can tell, a rear window control will do nicely. I'm thinking that if I rip apart a FL passenger's door, and take the wiring, I can splice this into the existing loom (ideally done in a way that doesn't spoil the wiring, in that reverting back to standard would be a relatively quick unplug, rather than breaking out the soldering iron and the heatshrink)

Thought, please gentlemen  :)

General Car Chat / *ahem*-com code reader
« on: 04 June 2015, 15:31:56 »
Dirty word, so I understand, however... a friend of a friend got rid of his Veccy GSi, but still keeping his *ahem*-com and offered me use of it at some point. Without going into things I can quite easily break (I gather people have had ECUs destroyed by cheap n cheerful code readers, yes?) what sort of things can I do with this - safely. I can google the 'h"My Naff Code Reader"' and get plenty of marketing-blurb, but I ask here as I'll get a straight answer.

edit: straight as rubber boomerang.  :D

Omega General Help / This removes the Digestive...
« on: 04 June 2015, 14:26:09 »
Thought best have look at the screenwash, as it's been abysmal of late. Grille off, found the motor and the rubber filter/grommet (never actually done one before) cleaned thoroughly, even got a staple and pierced all the holes. Couldn't believe how gunky it was. Refitted. Bonnet down, tested - amazing! Works brilliant. Bonnet up, grille on, bonnet down.

Ahh, as I had a few mins before dinnerhour ended, I opened the bonnet, looked for any signs of air leaks (lumpy idle that's another story), noticed a bit of water in the scuttle (from the screenwash) - strange - had a feel for dead leaves etc.

Tried to put the screenwash on with the bonnet up to chuck some water down the scuttle drain, see if it was draining ok. Nothing. Bonnet down, Nothing. Washers dead!!!

Bonnet up, looked for a pipe that may have pulled out, or anything. Nothing. Bonnet down, tried washers, Nothing.

Ahh, so a job well done.  >:(

I have not a chuffin clue!! Any suddenly-split pipe would surely be spurting water out very noticeably in the engine bay?

Omega General Help / Another Crank Sensor Question
« on: 03 June 2015, 12:01:48 »
Slight, slight lumpiness to my girl. Noticeable at idle, at what appears to be a steady indicated 500rpm, you can just feel a little bumping in the driver's seat, and a little vibration through the steering wheel. For completeness I'll mention this morning, and also one other time, last week the revs spiked at maybe 750 for literally a split second.

This weekend I'm on with plugs, all filters and oil, see if that alters anything.

HTs are brand new, DIS is decent.

If you add a couple more revs she smooths out, but when you look in the engine bay I still think she rocks a little on her engine mounts, I may be being very pedantic on this, however. Have a couple of spare ICVs which I'll swap over just to eliminate that, though can't see it myself.

Just wondering if the crank sensors can start like this, with a very tiny, tiny level of roughness? Can't think of anything else off the top of my head to cause this, that's all.  :-\

Thoughts appreciated  :y

General Car Chat / Diff engine speeds / etc
« on: 03 June 2015, 11:06:35 »
I got thinking, as a purely inquisitive paper exercise, what would happen to the respective 0-60, top speeds etc of various Omegas given different differentials?

Not sure if anyone has already done some work on this before, as my mathematical skills are shaky at best, so hence I ask.

Please show your working for extra marks :y

General Car Chat / An OOF Thank you!
« on: 29 May 2015, 11:09:28 »
Just to say an OOFer of many years (no longer an owner, but sometimes still drops by to view) Johnnyboy, texted me yesterday. Having sold me some scarce PFL parts in the past, much of which has helped her got through her first MoT, I popped round after work.

I acquired some boot struts, hose, locking wheel studs (genuine Vx) a working ashtray mechanism, part of the Multiram, a few door switches and a working DC012, as a 2nd spare. All for the princely sum of... FREE! Just a pint sometimes. Proper gent, and thank you!  :)

Omega General Help / A worthwhile trip...
« on: 27 May 2015, 09:10:21 »
Friend of mine recently (the other day) had a bereavement in the family, at the same time I saw some Omega wheels on cumtree (PFL CDX 15inch piddly ones, but they're original to the car and will probably be appearing for Billing) down near his house in Nottingham. So I decided to buy them, and visit my old mate at the same time.

So when I left I had a beautiful, working Omega V6.

1. On the way back my new-second-hand DC012 autochanger stopped working (discs all move and change, but the display just blinks, and it doesn't play any)
2. Sat in traffic and the idle started to wander a little, slight shudder as it dropped to about 475rpm. ICV need a clean, I'm guessing. Also time to check for air leaks. (the ICV is a known good 2nd hand and cleaned, and all the vac pipes were done 2 months ago!)
3. My mate being like a puppy in a bone shop was playing with the interior, pushing every button, and simultaneously locked the door and puled the handle - so now the interior handle is jammed out, and the door pin is down!

I don't mind, poor lad. The joke is I said 'stop doing that or she'll get angry with you'. She did!

Omega General Help / Adapter for MID
« on: 26 May 2015, 14:40:41 »
Just wondered if I'm the first to think an adapter not unlike this...

That could plug between a (more reliable) FL MID and the original PFL loom. Knowing less about electrics than a Hermit does about the January Sales, I'm in unfamiliar territory, but on principle the idea seems sound.

As far as I can tell it's as simple as

1 MID from scrap FL Omega
2 Plug and length of loom from scrap FL Omega
3 The socket from a broken PFL MID.
4 Smash the PFL MID apart and connect the FL wires to the appropriate parts of the PFL socket
5 Plug 'n' play

Everything appears simple apart from this bit-
"Smash the PFL MID apart and connect the FL wires to the appropriate parts of the PFL socket"
And therein lies the part where I suspect I shall come unstuck!

Anyone got any thoughts?

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / WTD: MFD for 2.5V6 Auto
« on: 26 May 2015, 14:33:51 »
Just wondering what the going rate is for an MFD. I'm starting to have difficulty deciphering my display now - and also whether it's worth getting one off an early FL, as I'd gain an extra function from the trip computer (gallons of fuel used if memory serves)

I'm looking into the possibility of making an adapter between a FL MID and the PFL loom.

Got a spare panel, complete with the buttons, minus the ashtray. Been offered another by a mate who breaks Omegas (non-forum member) with a working ashtray - mine's ok, but a spare ashtray wouldn't hurt. Point is I don't need a third set of Climate controls and wood surround! So hence I offer it on here - without knowing whether it's wortless and you can't give them away, or they're hen's teeth. Once I have a clue I can then place it for offer in the for sale section with appropriate price

Ta muchly :)

General Car Chat / First 'Pissy' pic!
« on: 22 May 2015, 09:45:33 »
Ok, so you've all been waiting, desperate to see a pic of my old girl. Well, some of you have been waiting desperately. Well, ok, not 'desperately', waiting with a modicum of interest. Well, ok, I think Webby asked to see a pic. Once.

Anyway, here she is. Not immaculate, plenty of scrapes and bumps (none of which you can see in the pic, hehe)

This is my first bit of proper cosmetic tweaking to her, everything else has been mechanical and repairing broken bits... Hope we approve, never seen anyone do it before.

(and worry not, a perfectly good grille was not butchered; this was a spare grille with a missing griffin, and the chrome's not great close up  :))

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / WTD - Z266 panels
« on: 20 May 2015, 15:32:31 »
Any about?

That's the PFL metallic black, 'Diamond Black'. The plan was originally to use FL metallic black panels but the difference between Z266 and Z20R is apparently noticeable enough.

In the end will be looking for all doors and front OS wing.

Just looking to see if there's any about at present, get some prices. Thanks in advance chaps  :y

General Car Chat / Z266 vs Z20R - difference?
« on: 18 May 2015, 11:27:22 »
So... Looking at Diamond Black - Z266 and Sapphire Black - Z20R, how do these differ?

The issue being that, though not abundant, FL panels in Sapphire are available; whereas panels (in a state of no-rust) for a PFL, well, not much chance at all!

If I 're-door' my lady with FL panels I'm just wondering if it would be like putting a Z147 panel next to a Z157 - the colour difference would be there, but less noticeable. Also silver is notoriously hard to match, black must rank as surely the easiest to 'hide' and colour/shade differences. Has anyone has experience of side-to side comparison of PFL and FL metallic black cars?

Guessing that the answer will be a resounding 'Nooo, they're different colours, that's why they have different colour codes. Idiot.' But just inuring how different they are.  :)

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / FS: Boot release switch
« on: 18 May 2015, 09:38:29 »
FL boot release switch good nick, only a few small 'pitting' marks very close up. Getting rarer as the rubberised coating starts to wear off. All proceeds going to the restoration of my Pissy my PFL V6  ;)

£6 posted  :)

Other switches available as I find them  :)

General Car Chat / Engine work at Billing?
« on: 14 May 2015, 10:34:25 »
As I've now sourced almost all the components I need for giving my beautiful lady 'Supertouring' spec engine, and Billing is not too far away I'm wondering if I attempted to swap the Cams over during Billing, would this be a stupid idea or actually a very logical one, given the vast number of Omega-savvy chaps (of which a fair few would be OOFers I suspect) which would be on-hand to point and laugh help out if when I get stuck.

What do we think? In theory the job is a couple of hours, especially with experienced hands.
