What does this light mean

Driving home last night a warning light suddenly came up on the dash.The car was and still is running fine.When i checked the manual it said this light was for an electrical/immobiliser problem and would go into limp home mode.The immobiliser works fine no limp home mode and so far no electrical problems.
Can anyone suggest why has this light decided to come on,could it be a problem yet to develop or is it just there to annoy me. :o

It has certainly come on for a reason.
You need to read / have the codes read, what engine have you got?

slightly more awkward then as you cant read the fault codes with a paperclip :(

You can either buy a cheap tech2 device off ebay, which connects to your car through a laptop.  very flaky, but normally works, about £30.

A generic OBD code scanner will also likely get the codes.

Failing that a garage with code reader.

There 2 real tech's about, owned by theboy, but not local to you, or someone may offer to plug in a cheapo one to try and help you out if someone nearby has one

I've got a cheapo Tech2 in Alton, Hampshire. Still not that close but if you ever come this way you're welcome.

If i am ever out that way i will give you a call.
Someone at work suggested Hometune to come out and look at the car so may give that a go.I just hope they have the correct equipment to diagnose the fault. As  i said car is running well so not sure what to do yet.

No Problem. In the meanwhile have a look under the bonnet for any electrical or plumbing connections that aren't secure.

Could be a loose connector on something or maybe a pipe has come adrift and is causing a vacuum leak.

Has any work been done on the car recently?

Good luck, may be worth investing in a code scanner for future use.
They are not expensive and easily pay for themselves.

A lot of us use them as another thing to regularly check for codes, like tyre pressures, levels etc.

There can often be codes stored which dont flag the lights to come on, one of which (19) can cause the car not to start!

Good to check for early warning signs.

if you have a laptop with a serial port, these are a cheap vauxhall only solution,
software a bit buggy and 1/2 hungarian, but they work for getting / reseting codes, work with all but the latest cars.

If you want a generic scanner, these cost a bit more, but will work on most 2001 > cars

not looked at these for a while, but seem to be a lot of cheaper ones now, but have no experience, try an obd scanner search.

As my cars are both older, I had no choice but the tech2 option, with an OBD 'fleet' I would probaby go the generic route.

It would be good to confirm your car is OBD compatible 1st.
I expected the 2.2 2000 CDX to be OBD compliant, but a borrowed reader wouldn't work with it.

I need to read and clear an error on my 02 plate 2.6, is this odb2 at all?

I know i live nr MDTM and he's already cleared them once but i want to clear them myself if i can.

I can see some of the 3rd party readers can easily touch £80, do i need to splash out so much or can i get away with a cheaper one?

A generic obd2 reader will read your engine (but no other systems)
