Bad hot starting 2.5td bmw engine ?

Starts brill when cold but not when hot, seems to take ages to start. Replaced battery, engine temp sensor, & crank sensor. Is there a sensor on the pump?

Have you done the paperclip test to see if you have any codes?
might be an air leak somewhere

This is a common problem on tractors, and also on Range Rovers fitted with the same lump.

A brand new (and 2.5TD specific) battery cured mine last year, and this was after having a new and very expensive injection pump fitted. However, first off, I'd try changing ALL the leak-off pipes, plus fitting a brand new fuel filter filled with Comma Diesel Magic or Forte. You could also try the 'paper clip test' and/or get the codes read too. Lets hope the dreaded '64' doesn't show up!

See where you go from there.

Done the paper clip test today, gave out fault code 92 listed as a cruise control fault but mine doesn't have cruise. No other fault came out. Have been told by friend it could be the sensor on the pump ! but can't see one. The new battery has seemed to help but still takes a while to start when warm.

with that engine, the cruise control fault is always logged if you dont have cruise control!

the only way to fix is add the cruise stalk  ;D

It's probably the fuel temp sensor that's causing your grief here.

It's within the injection pump itself, and not therefore, (I think), user-serviceable. Click on the link given by Turk and take a look. I've not heard of any bad comments with this.

I seem to recall that Omegatoy recently had some gen on this issue - might be worth sending him a 'PM' before delving further.

Next time it does it, try pouring cold water over the pump to cool it. If it starts ok after that then odds on it's the temp sensor.

As for fitting cruise control. Buy stalk (about £30). Fit stalk (about 20 mins). Job done. 2.5TD's are cruise enabled. :y

Ian D fitted me one of those hotfix gadgets  a couple of weeks ago, and it appears to have worked. it cost me with delivery just under £33 . advise invest in one.  :) :)
