'F' showing on display??
« on: 12 August 2009, 14:53:44 »

Hi, ;)

Recently noticed that an 'F' is coming up on the the screen, its when I have the display showing how many miles of fuel  I have left, the 'F' appears (figures dissapear) for a few seconds then its gone and figures come back.
Car runs normal when it happens, so not effecting anything that I can feel.
Car is 2000 facelift, 3.0mv6, auto.

Any ideas please. Thanks :y

only heard of that in relation to the outside temperature.

Is that reporting correctly?

Is the F shown when the car's displaying the outside temperature? Had that issue few days and it was a knackered external temperature sensor. New one sorted out the thing  :y

If you have climate, it will affect it, but not sure about non-climate.
They're really cheap and easy to change (even I can do it!! ::)) Might be worth a post in the parts wanted/for sale section as someone is bound to have one.

What will affect in case of climate equipped cars?My temp sensor is working but it shows bad values...for example the otside temperature is 30c and it shows only 24C, so always show less temperature...

The handbook says that 'F' stands for 'fault' so it makes sense that if the display doesn't know either distance or fuel level then it won't be able to work out fuel consumption (and hence miles to empty).

I don't know if the temperature sensor is NTC or PTC. If it is NTC (negative temperature coefficient) then the resistance will fall as the temperature rises. If you have a poor connection somewhere that adds resistance then the display would show an offset low temperature. Alternatively thermistors do fail. If you have an incorrect temperature reading I would try cleaning the connectors first before changing the sensor.

If the climate control doesnt know, or has the wrong outside temp, then it cannot apply heat / cold correctly to maintain you set temperature.

£6-7 new from Vauxhall

I think you're being misled re the temp sensor. As you say it's to do with miles per gallon.
When you say your ECU is faulty, which one? MPG, speed ec are worked out by the ABS ECU and if that's faulty it won't know how far or how fast you're going so will have trouble working out your mpg ... hence the F  :y
