Is it actually the temperature reached that is displayed upon the guage, or is the relative degree of needle deflection the case in point?  ie does 82 ish on a facelift equal 93 ish on a prefacelift as the actual needle deflections are roughly the same?

As said earlier, just below middle of gauge is the area you want - the cooler running engines (DBW) should have different guages so this lower temp is still just below midway...
