No chance, I doubt if I know what half of the road signs mean nowadays. As I am a senior driver, I drive at sensible speeds, try to keep within speed limits, and rely on experience to keep me out of trouble, as I imagine most drivers do after a few decades on the road.

I'd have to learn the 'new' methods of driving, but reckon I could pass OK, having jusy last week discussed the test with my niece and nephew, and what their minors were (and majors in case of my niece)

Wait six seconds at a Stop sign even if nothing around, taking last exit on a dual carriageway roundabout stay in inside lane and don't indicate except to leave the roundabout. There are many other wierdness too.

I passed my 'invitation' to attend a speed awareness course a few years ago ........ does that count? 
They come out with some BS.  eg don't cross your hands across the steering wheel, just in case the airbag went off & broke your arm(s)  and don't drive your auto with two feet, incase you press both pedals at the same time!!!!

not if you are driving to the correct system to pass the advanced test you would fail on improper use of mirrors not because you are not using them but the DSA system of car control is different to the advanced test...i get retested every 3-4 years so may be able to pass but as before really

You jest, but I remember back when I was at school a mate of mine got his driving test appointment. It was about half an hour before he'd have to leave home to go to a performance of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. He was one of the more flamboyant fancy dress types who regularly went to to see it and wouldn't have time to get the "gear" on after his test so yes, you guessed it. He took his driving test in stockings, suspenders, basque, the works, with a dodgy raincoat over the top.

He passed, too.

I doubt I would pass, I have a habit of resting my right elbow on the window ledge bit of the door  In a way I support the idea of retesting people. That said it would have to be a fair test with age and experience taken into account.
I would retest younger people more than older people, say Young people every 2 to 3 years upto say 40 years old and then every 5 years up to say 75 years old and then possibly back every 2 to 3 years above 75. But the test for older people would be just basic competency nothing more.


Just as a small criticism of driving tests, if an able bodied person takes a driving test he has to keep both hands on the steering wheel. A person with only one arm obviously does not. My gripe is what is ok for one should be ok for the other should it not ?

Me too. In any other field where potentially dangerous vehicles or machinery are being used there would be a programme of regular re-assessment and re-training. Why not for driving?

Presumably because if an able-bodied person doesn't have both hands on the wheel he's probably texting, eating, picking his nose, etc. with the other hand and thus likely to be distracted from the job in hand.

I had to redo it about 8 yrs ago. Picked up too many points in my boy racer days and got disqualified!! had been driving for about 6 yrs when I lost them. Going into the test was easy enough, pretty relaxed just knew I had to concentrate and try to forget the bad habits. Had great chat with the examiner and told him what happened while I was doing the test. He didn't seem to test me much, just observed my driving and chatted away. Everything went perfect until I made a one handed turn (90 right) into the test centre car park which he commented on immediately!!!!!!!!!! Once I'd parked up he said ''I'm sorry to say.... you've passed''. Then he started laughing and said no-one does that hand to hand thing on the steering wheel, its just stupid!! I think its all down to the examiner you get on the day, some of them have a total power trip once they are on a test and then on the other hand some must sleep through the test when you see some of the drivers out there!!!

I think i might just scrape through, after spending 44yrs driving hgv's but you are learning all the time, does anyone remember a program on tv called Highway Patrol? the program allways ended with the star of the show saying, be as good a driver as you think you are. good advice i think.

A couple of years ago when I was helping master Vamps learn the basics I had a go at the theory on the computer, I kept failing...........I was seeing more hazards and seeing others to early....

I don't think many would pass today's test without a brush up at least, and is it reasonable to expect to pass without some sort of research? I don't think it is.

As I've no idea what's even involved in today's test(s) I would not expect to pass if the test was taken this second.

I'm still aware of the standard required to get through a driving test, having taught both my Son and Daughter to drive (saved them a fortune in lessons) but I would have to be quite focussed to stick with it for the duration of the test.

Didnt say there was. ......But operators are normally tested at 3 year intervals in order to demonstrate their employers compliance with H&S rules & regs. Also normally further testing if changing to larger or fundamentally different types of machine.

Its a Certificate of Basic Training and you need one for every different piece of mechanised machinery. I did my reach one a few months ago and then had to do my counterbalance one because that's the one most employers want apparently

What you will find is that some organisations have thier own internal training and certification standards and dont even consider the recognised 'certs' as acceptable (which is understandable).

Its all about compitency and your ability to demonstrate it plus, in the event of an accident, that you are able to prove that the compitency had been checked.

As an example, if you came to the heritage centre with a cert you would not be allowed to use any of the forklifts until you had completed out internal course and passed the required exam.  ......and you can get to an approved level without a cert.

I know this is also true of some firms to!

Yes, the driving test is a doddle once you've remembered to focus on what you're doing

Passed my C and CE in quick succession recently, and would happily take both again tomorrow 

Six minors on my C test and 5 on my CE, not too shabby for a taxi driving former multidrop driver

Just got one module left for the CPC and job's jobbed

True, but if you only have the use of 1 arm, should you be banned from driving?  No. But they have as much control of the vehicle as they are physically able to..

If you have 2 arms/hands then both should be used to control the vehicle.

I've driven all the way from Guildford to Norwich using only the lefthand lane for the entire 190 miles, with the single exception of 100yards of hard shoulder on the M25 when the driver of a car in the middle lane woke up and remembered which lane they were supposed to be in ps it was 2am.
