To be honest I wouldn't use a battery charger......they have a bit of a nasty non-smoothed output.

In the past I have used a battery and jump leads and just dobbed the positive onto the starter motor feed from under the engine bay.

I don't understand why you can't open the boot. :-/
When this happened on my 96 P Reg Elite, I opened the boot, forced down the back seat, and had a volunteer (my wife) climb through and open the bonnet. Jump leads on the battery, problem solved.  ;)

I doubt the rectifier diodes in them would cope then.....

from memory when I got into my old miggy (pre-facelift) in this way, I seem to remember that when turning the key in the driver's door lock you had to turn it to the rear of the car to get past the resistance - isn't that the way you normally turn it to lock the door? It then freed up at the end of travel, could then turn the key back to vertical and to the end of the travel clockwise to unlock.

then again that was a few months ago and I've not needed to do it since!

When battery OK, its easy to turn. When power is lost, you have no electrical assistance, and it is very stiff, esp if deadlocked...
