Wiper Delay Function Problem
« on: 05 October 2010, 11:05:24 »

 Hi Guy's,
My '02 Facelift wipers have never had a delayed wipe function on the front (rear ok) so, as the weather has turned, gotta be sorted, right?
To start, briefed myself on the two Oof modifications available and got started.
Pulled out a relay (which looked way to small) from location K8, ordered VW relay  part number '357 955 531' actually received part number '3BO 955 531' from VW (part number superceded).
Plugged relay in and NOTHING, D'oh! Both speed settings still work.
Ah! check the rear wipe delay still works and pinch that relay (a known good unit) place it in the front position [K8] NOTHING, wipers will not even 'park' when switched to the 'delayed wipe option.'
I shorted socket numbers 2 & 5 [53E & 31B] wipers 'Park' ok.
I shorted socket numbers 2 & 8 [53E & 15] wipers 'Park' ok.
Basic wiring appears to be ok, run out of inspiration.
Recommendations anyone  ?
Regards,
Ding A Ling. >:(

Hey Philrich,
Thanks for the responce.
The relay was a Mid Brown plastic colour [kinda old cardboard colour] about 30mm tall with 5 blade terminations.
Embossed diagram on the relay casing showed a relay with a resistor across the windings?   :-/
The Haynes diagrams all show the layout with the 'variable resistor' but this bears no resembalance to my Miggy......so, what is the new wiring in the car ?  [ok, I get the 'resistor in the relay can' design].
Cheers fella,
Lokking forward to any replys,

Get one of these off ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/no-99-VW-VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-POLO-WIPER-RELAY-357-955-531-/220640021113?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item335f2b8a79

worked a treat for me.

Hi UKTigger,

Q: If it worked for you, is your Miggy the Facelift with NO variable resistor [wipe delay adjustment] ?

Hi again ;) I have a 2002 facelift 2.2 auto & my wiper delay as fitted at the factory is a one flick every 9 or 10 seconds with no adjustment. The Omega wiper delay relay is standard across the range AFAIK? and is the tall Yellow one in the main triangular ECU/Relay box. I understand the relays are set out differently according to the model & equipment fitted but the wiper relay should definately be the tall yellow one. The VW Relay (known as the 99 relay as it has 99 written on it) is a direct swap for this yellow VX relay & gives you alternative delays from 2 seconds up to 10 seconds, whichever delay you set it to 'learn'.  :y

Here is mine (before fitting the '99'):

Ding.

I did this mod on my 2002 2.2 dti and the relay was in the position of the grey one in Jimbob's photo. The main thing is the relay to replace is the tall yellow one, wherever it may be on your model. Good Luck

Ding A Ling.

Yes, I have a 2003 2.2 facelift and my partner has a 2004 2.2 facelift, both had intermittant wipe, which was non adjustable.

I replaced the big yellow relay with the VW one on both cars and both are working perfectly.
