Zafira power steering
« on: 01 March 2012, 10:51:23 »

I've got a 2000 1.6 Zafira in with a power steering fault. The power steering is electrical rather than mechanical so i'm going to google to see where the fuses and relays are. Any of you knowledgeable people know where I might find then?

TIA :y

I've been reading on Google that if the alternator isn't kicking out 14v that the first thing to go is the power steering so I think i'll check that first. It seems that the power steering went then came back again and a week later its gone all together.

If it's the same as a similar aged Astra, they are behind a cubby hole in front of your right knee.  :y

I've checked all the fuses under there Andy and they're fine, also the fuses under the bonnet are ok as well ;)

I'd say that it's almost certainly related to the alternator output ;)

Battery voltage looks good at 14.2v so sort of rules out alternator issue

Hi Pete.

Have a look at the BBA Reman site, it sounds like this system is similar to one on a meriva I had to fix recently, see if there are any clues on there to the typical faults.
iirc there is an additional signal wire from the alternator to the steering 'brain' to say "OK to take gallons of current", on start-up I recall a relay or contactor clicking in under the dash once the alternator was running....does the steering start-up at all?

There all electrohydraulic power steering setups ala the Astra G and H.

From memory, there is no fuse for the power steering feed as its a bit to beefy but the most likely cause is low alternator output but also check the battery connections as the PS feed is normaly bolted directly to the terminal and I have seen one or two that were loose.

Sadly its a little early for the one that can be talked to by Tech 2.

Ah, if its the EHS one then look on the suspension tower or bulkhead for a connector with some fat wires in it, on our previous Astra the chassis connection for the motor return current dropped off due to corrosion in the connector.
There was a fuse in or in-line with this connector, big one iirc.
