You didn't really expect any positive reviews from this lot did you Al?  ;D
;D

Went to look at and bought a temporary car pending fixing the S Class properly.

Working MK1 facelift Bini Cooper with almost 6 months MoT.

Needs a few bits addressing, but actually drives quite well for what it is.

Thanks Viral_Jim and for Stemo I want to inform that we have hot days almost every Summer.  Now it does not look very promising...

That's more than we have!  ;D
Technically, two sunny days justified the addition of an 's' at the end of day.

To have more sunny days than the two we get, Finland only needs three days.  >:D

That said, far enough north and the Midsummer month  may as well be a single day. :o

Well, considering the £400 entry price, first impressions are positive.

Actually as described, which itself is a bonus, and surprisingly tidy to drive. Obviously it weighs half as much as the S Class and has a third of the power >:D but at 45+mpg, it will pay for itself in about a  fortnight. Which is nice. :)

I am rubbish with names, flying with different people everyday doesn't help matters :-[

Will keep an eye out on the way to/from San Diego  :y

Although when I tried filming the Aurora Borialis, the video didn't pick it up over the glare from the wingtip markers. Got some decent stills though 8)

The Prince engine is a PSA BMW blob.

The earlier petrols had a Tritec engine developed with Chrysler ;)

How easy are they to overheat and how is the cooling fan switched?

Looking at a potential temporary runabout and they seem to be a reasonable balance between affordable and available. :-X

Only looking at facelift cars because I like the idea of being able to drive to work and already have one knackered gearbox  ;D

Because apparently shooting them is somewhat unreasonable and therefore frowned upon...

Who knew :-X

Isn't it a ZF box on the straight 6 diseasal :-\
The non 24v TD had an AR25.
Did they BMWfy it then :-\

Mind you, no wonder they go bang if you turn the boost up...

Car has previous form for gearbox speed sensor discrepancies as well but they weren't significant enough to be a priority... Live and learn.
Autobox speed discrepancies - usually gives a P0730 Incorrect Ratio - needs to be fixed immediately, due to the catastrophic wear it causes...
Apparently so :'(

The box hasn't gone bang to the point where it is making any noise but for it to slip and fall to shift, even intermittently, there's obviously enough debris in the hydraulic circuits to prevent the fluid getting to where it's supposed to.

If its been slipping for that long, even if due to low fluid (though I though older merch had dipsticks?), I'd suggest that the clutches would have taken quite a hammering.  And indicates a hydro-mechanical fault.

Thus I'd begin to suggest the box is shagged.

So either a rebuild, or a working one from a donor (and use the service kit on that) IMHO.  Not sure its worth wasting that £300 kit on what is in there.
No dipstick on the W221.

I am leaning towards a temporary replacement and then gather up the parts and a suitable replacement box and get it put in as a belts and braces approach and.fitting that with replacement solenoids and TCM as those are generally the precursor to more substantial failures. Car has previous form for gearbox speed sensor discrepancies as well but they weren't significant enough to be a priority... Live and learn.

My post was specifically in relation to the Omega Estate and was from experience of being perhaps one of two people on this forum who has actually replaced a rear quarter panel.

I acknowledged that I was wrong in that the vehicle in question here is in fact an Astra, but I left my post otherwise unedited as.iy.is very much relevant to the Omega Estate and may therefore be of use to someone down the road.
