Omega General Help / Stain on fuel tank
« on: 18 April 2017, 19:42:58 »
Hi

Noticed a stain on the bottom of tank as if slightly leaking, hard to be accurate about where is coming from but looks like from top down the back of hanger and then staining around about bottom of where hanger strap is, or from down the front of tank and blown back by wind.

Actually no smell of gas (unless I drop one!). It might be when engine is running and car moving perhaps, then dries up by time it has been sitting.

If I remember rightly is there a common fault with the pick up pipe rusting on omegas?

General Car Chat / MG Door won't unlock/open
« on: 11 April 2017, 22:30:14 »
I was helping my neighbour with his MG, the drivers door key wouldn't unlock the door so we took the door top trim off and I fashioned an old copper pipe flat, pushed it down the gap in door and window and pushed the little latch down and it opened (honest officer, I wasn't jimmying it open); turns out the little plastic collar between lock rod and latch from key barrel was loose and had slid down the rod, so I pushed it back up and in to the hole in barrel latch meaning could open with key again.

Trouble is there doesn't seem to be any mechanical latch on the passenger side, when the electric key fob thing is operated you can hear a click from drivers door but nothing happens. I'm assuming that both key movement on drivers door and the fob should kick both doors locks up, driven from the drivers side master solenoid. There is no mechanical key lock on the passenger side.

Any other way of opening the passenger door? I'm wondering if the key fob is knackered as he has to pull the cover off it and press the little buttons on the circuit board to make it work, however as I mentioned if the movement of key is not activating master solenoid then it's bloomin well stuck shut.

General Car Chat / Senator head bolts torque
« on: 03 April 2017, 11:00:45 »
Hi

Does anyone have the torque wrench settings for later senator 3.0 12v head bolts?

Had a look on net, ABS, can't see anything and my autodata books are not with me at the moment!

There was a guide for the early senator/monza on ABS but not sure if it is the same - 74 Lb/ft tightening in a spiral outwards from centre.

Cheers

Omega General Help / Windscreen rubber surround loose
« on: 23 March 2017, 19:20:19 »
Hi

At the top corners the surround rubber on the screen is loose and won't push back in. I'm wondering if at some point a new windscreen has been put in and the surround not put back in right. Picture not the best as took at dusk.

How do I get this back into place?

Cheers

Some interesting stuff in it like to reduce handbrake snatch you are advised to drive the car back and forward while gently applying handbrake to clean the shoes as they do not get used in normal service braking, which I have done anyway. Also noticed they advise to connect and disconnect Earth lead on a battery first or connect up to that first with leads. WTF? Earth first I would have thought - no?

Oh and one other piece of advice: be courteous when closing doors at night as slamming doors is noisy (good for that neighbour you hate then!)

I'll also need to read the part about operating the facelift heater about another 20 times to try and work it out!

General Car Chat / Copper radiators - what Anti-Freeze?
« on: 08 March 2017, 21:47:52 »
As some of you may or may not know modern AF eat's copper, so a friendly dude I know has an old yank motor with a copper rad and is wondering what anti-freeze to use, does anyone know? I found on an US site a guy mentioned G05 Comma but still not sure really.

Omega General Help / Plenum gaskets for v6 what ones do I need
« on: 21 February 2017, 22:08:37 »

Hi, so about to order everything I need for TB change on 2.6 V6 can anyone tell me what gaskets I actually need for plenum chamber? I'm confused as there seems to be 3 separate O rings per side but also 3 'O' rings joined in a sort of daisy chain. Is it both or what?

Here's the diagram I'm looking at. Do I only need No. 13, the 6 'O' rings, or those and the No. 16 & 17? Feekin lost here (waves fist up in air at vx parts complexity) :)

Omega General Help / Wishbone bush never had plastic insert
« on: 01 February 2017, 22:05:33 »
I was looking at the guide for fitting poly bushes and from what I can see on this guide (link below) mine never had those plastic insert things on the old bush:

Bit late now but should it have had those inserts? Not sure if they were different for different models/year or something, mine being an 02 2.6 v6

Omega General Help / Play in box when wheels turned in
« on: 23 January 2017, 21:10:56 »
When I was doing some of the front end work the other day I checked on straight ahead there was no play in any of the suspension components but when I turned wheels about half way in there was a about half a centimetre play at the road wheel side to side from the box, there was distinct clunk from it. I could see it was the box and not a component down the line.

Is this normal for steering boxes? I'd heard that power steering can have play when engine not on.

Omega General Help / Central locking locks, then unlocks itself
« on: 22 January 2017, 12:51:38 »
Being a cavalier owner I am quite used to this but now my omega is doing it. I don't know if it is cold weather as cavy is doing it too (lock to deadlock then opens/shuts/opens/shuts/opens) itself.

Mega is doing it once. So I press the key button thingy and it locks then unlocks, I just lock it again and no issues. Is this another one of those quirks I have to live with or is it pointing to something maybe more sinister with key fob or something else?

I had heard on the cavy that it is the locking wire loom going onto the boot lid hinge that break and short out the system. All the bootlid wires on my cavy are broken awaiting fixing but nothing is touching on the "live side" of the wire loom.

Omega General Help / wishbone rear nut/bolt removal
« on: 21 January 2017, 11:53:53 »
Removing front wb this morning, eveything going nice and easy then boom hit the back nut & bolt to discover the bolt head is inside the subframe, no captive nut and bolt fed in from underneath as i would have thought. So how do i remove that? I can get my hand in round the top and get a socket on but it just spinning when turning from underneath. Cant see a way to get a ratchet or anything in to stop it turning.  :o

Ps just found the guide, knew it was somewhere. Attack from top. Hope ican muster up a concoction of half and 3/8 extensions that's long enough and there aint any electrical gubbins down there to short out on  ::)

General Discussion Area / Compression Tester Extension
« on: 13 January 2017, 17:02:21 »
Hi can anyone enlighten me to where I can get the correct extension piece for my compression tester. The end of the compression tester hose has a crimped on threaded section for screwing into plug hole however the grip on it is way too short I can't reach it due to recess for the plug.

It is a Bergen 5254 tool with 14/18mm adapters but I need a longer adapter for the 14mm. Any ideas where to get? I'm a bit confused with sizing as some are saying m14 x 12/10 no idea if this is the male/female threads or what.

This isn't for Omega, one of my other projects in case anyone is wondering.

Thanks

G

Hi what's the best drill bits anyone can recommend for drilling out threads. Is cobalt the name of the game for this?
